Stretton Named to All-Big 12 Freshman Team

MANHATTAN, Kan. –  Millie Stretton of K-State tennis was named to the Women’s All-Big 12 Freshman Team, the conference office announced.

A native of Edinburgh, Scotland, Stretton captured a team-high 14 singles wins as well as seven doubles victories in her first dual season as a Wildcat. She competed in No. 1 doubles for all but one match while she moved from No. 6 singles to as high as No. 2. In positions No. 4-6 in singles, Stretton was a combined 13-2.

Stretton’s 14 singles wins in dual matches – 12 of which were in straight sets – were the most by a K-State freshman since Petra Niedermayerova had 21 in 2011.

Stretton paired up with sophomore Carolina Costamagna and fellow freshman Ana Garcia Navas in doubles, competing in the No. 1 spot with both. She had four wins with Costamagna before joining Garcia Navas with the start of the Big 12 schedule. The freshmen earned their three victories against Big 12 opponents TCU, Iowa State and West Virginia.

Stretton was one of six athletes named to the All-Freshman Team, joined by Anastasia Rychagova (KU), Alex Valenstein (Texas Tech), Felicity Maltby (Texas Tech), Liza Buss (Iowa State) and Nina Khmelnitckaia (KU).

This is first All-Big 12 honor for a Wildcat since Niedermayerova was named All-Big 12 Singles in 2014.

The Wildcats finished the 2016 dual season with an 11-14 record, with the 11 victories being the most for the program since 2011.
