Strong Singles Play Lifts Wildcats Past UT Arlington

ARLINGTON, Tex. - The Kansas State women’s tennis team defeated UT Arlington, 4-3, behind four singles wins on Sunday at the UTA Tennis Center.

The Wildcats (9-8) won the match despite losing the doubles point to the Mavericks (7-6). It was the second time K-State came out on top without winning doubles, with the first being against Washington State.

Carolina Costamagna and Millie Stretton got big wins that ended a three-match losing streak. Costamagna defeated Angeles de Los Rios, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1. Stretton took down Astrid Gehre, 6-3, 6-4,

at No. 2. 

Ana Garcia Navas won her fourth straight by beating Jessica Birowski, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4. Garcia Navas is 3-1 in three-set matches this season.

K-State got a huge three-set win from Maria Panaite, who defeated Carla Cerdan Vives, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, at No. 6. Panaite’s win sealed the road victory for the Wildcats.

The Mavericks’ Anna Wichert stopped the tear that Livia Cirnu has been on by winning, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, at No. 5. While Ines Mesquita lost to Agustina Serio, 2-6, 5-7, at No. 3.

UT Arlington won the doubles point with Gehre/Wichert defeating Costamagna/Mesquita at No. 2 and Serio/Valeria Lopez beating Iva Bago/Cirnu at No. 3.

The Wildcats improved to 3-3 in road matches.

K-State will return home next week to play two conference foes as it will play Iowa State on Friday, March 24, at 3 p.m., and then will play West Virginia Sunday at 10 a.m.
