Throwers Strong on Day One of UTSA Invitational

SAN ANTONIO, Texas –  Inclement weather postponed the final events of the first day of competition at the UTSA Invitational but not before the Kansas State track and field team saw three first-place finishes at the Park West Athletics Complex on Friday.

After three events scored, the women’s team sits in second place with 26 total points, while the men are in first place with 33 points after two events scored.

The first day of competition was highlighted by junior Brady Grunder, who broke the school record in hammer throw with a mark of 61.94m/203-02. The previous school record was held by Tomaz Bogovic, who set the mark in 2011 with a throw of 61.22m/200-10 at the ASU Invitational.

Two other Wildcats finished in the top-five of the men’s weight throw as fellow junior Kyle Smith recorded a personal best throw of 61.15/200-07, good for the third-best throw in school history. Freshman Tyler Merkley finished in fourth place with a mark of 59.95m/196-08.

Senior Sara Savatovic, the three-time defending Big 12 hammer throw champion, recorded a win in the event with a throw of 65.00m/213-03. Fellow hammer thrower Janee’ Kassanavoid also posted a strong outing in the event, recording a personal best throw of 59.34m/194-08 to finish in third place.

K-State javelin throwers also saw success on day one of the UTSA Invitational. Junior Haley Pitko recorded a personal best throw of 46.81m/153-07 to win the event. Senior Dwight Davidson also recorded a personal best in the men’s javelin throw with a mark of 64.46m/211-06 to take second place, while freshman Derek Selk finished in fifth place with a mark of 58.22m/191-00.

As a result of the impending inclement weather on Friday evening, the men's discus throw will be contested at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. The 3,000m steeplechase and 5000 meter run will also be pushed back and run at 11 a.m.

The rest of Saturday’s schedule will remain the same. The running schedule for field events is slated to begin at 11 a.m. CT, while the running schedule for track events will begin at 2 p.m. CT.
