Treasure Qualifies for Olympic High Jump Finals

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Former Wildcat and Canadian Alyx Treasure had a huge day in the high jump qualifiers, setting a new personal best in the event en route to qualifying for her first Olympic finals at the Olympic Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Thursday morning.

Treasure was dominant out of the gate, not missing on the first three bars of 1.80m/5-10.75, 1.85m/6-00.75 or 1.89m/6-02.25. Despite missing her first attempt at 1.92m/6-03.50, she cleared her second attempt to have the opportunity to jump at the automatic qualifying height.

The winner of the Canadian Championships recorded her final jump of 1.94m/6-04.25 on her final attempt at the height to not only solidify her spot in the event finals but also set a new personal best, topping her old PR of 1.93m/6-04 which she set in Manhattan in May.

“Alyx had a personal best in her first Olympic Games and made the final,” Treasure’s personal coach and Kansas State head coach Cliff Rovelto said. “That is pretty special.”

Akela Jones, representing Barbados, was also in action in Thursday’s competition, finishing in 31st place in the event with a final jump of 1.85m/6-00.75. This was the second event for Jones at the 2016 Olympics Games as she finished in 20th place in the heptathlon with a final score of 6,173 points.

During the heptathlon high jump, the St. Michael, Barbados, native recorded a mark of 1.89m/6-02.25, which was good for fourth place in that competition.

“Akela was a little better technically in today’s high jump,” Rovelto added. “However, she did not have the same energy as she did in the heptathlon high jump.”

Treasure will be the final Wildcat in action at the 2016 Olympic Games when she competes in the high jump finals at 6:30 p.m. CT on Saturday. A live stream, as well as live results, for the event can be found here
