Valadez Claims Second-Straight Junior Victory

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Incoming Kansas State men’s golfer Levi Valadez earned his second junior victory in as many weeks as he won on the first playoff hole of the prestigious Byron Nelson Junior Championship – part of the Legends Junior Tour – at Lakewood Country Club in Dallas, Texas.

Valadez, a product of San Antonio, held a three-shot lead with a 36-hole score of 7-under par 135 but faltered in Thursday’s final round with a 1-over par 72 to finish at 6-under par 207. He looked poised to win the event down the stretch until a double bogey on No. 16 and a bogey on the No. 18 dropped him into a tie with Plano’s Parker Coody.

However, Valadez, with the help of his caddy, current K-State men’s golfer Ben Fernandez, was able to bounce back from the slow finish. Coody bogeyed the first playoff hole – No. 18 – while Valadez made a short par putt to claim the championship.

The victory comes on the heels of a win last week at the Patrick Reed Junior Championship, an American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) event in The Woodlands, Texas, when he carded a three-round score of 9-under par 207.

One of three incoming freshmen for head coach Grant Robbins in 2016-17, Valadez currently ranks 14th nationally in the class of 2016 by Golfweek. A product of Alamo Heights High School, he finished fourth in the Texas 5A High School State Championship each of the last two seasons.
