WBB Italy Diary, #3: By Kelly Thomson

The first place he took us to was the museum that is home to the original statue of David created by Michelangelo. It's safe to say that we were all in awe as to how anybody, especially in that era, would be able to create something that lifelike and huge from a single block of marble! We ended our tour visiting the giant cathedral, Saint Maria del Fiore, in the center of the city of Florence. After our long day of walking and sightseeing we went to a family-style Italian restaurant for dinner. This was a great choice by the coaches! The waiters brought out so many different courses and classic Italian dishes for us all to try. It was such a cool experience to try all new dishes that we may have been too scared to ever order on our own....and I guess the four different sample-sized desserts they brought us weren't too bad either. Day six was when we finally were able to see what I'd been looking forward to most, the Leaning Tower of Pisa! I was so excited to see it in person, after seeing pictures and reading about it, so you can imagine my excitement when Coach Patterson told us that we were going to climb to the top! It was worth all 322 steps to the top; the views were absolutely unbelievable! After taking tons of pictures, both on top of the tower and "holding up" the tower as a team, we hopped back on the bus for a free afternoon in Florence.  Heidi (Brown), Ashlynn (Knoll) and I spent the entire afternoon walking through the streets of Florence, passing by tons of vendors and shops. Just from our first purchase of the afternoon, it was easy to see just why Ashlynn is a business and marketing major and Heidi and I are not. Watching her wheel and deal and make the vendors squirm until they lowered their prices was absolutely hilarious. It didn't matter what they were selling, we always walked away from the booth knowing that we'd received the absolute best deal possible. For those of you looking to hire a sales rep anytime soon, I definitely recommend this girl (your welcome for the reference, Ash). We shopped our little hearts (and wallets) out and then walked back to the hotel to relax for the night. On that note, it's time for me to head to bed because we have an early morning tomorrow to head to Rome! Stay Purple and GO CATS!!Ciao! Kelly Thomson
