Wedekind Takes First Place at Augustana Twilight

– Senior Morgan Wedekind highlighted the Kansas State cross country team’s season opening race in style by recording the team’s first first-place finish since 2014 at the Augustana Twilight at Yankton Trail Park on Friday evening.

The women went on to finish the competition in second place with 42 total points, while the men also took second place with 48 total points. South Dakota won the women’s competition with 23 points, while Nebraska took the men’s title with 17 points.

“Overall, I thought it was a decent showing,” head coach Ryun Godfrey said about his team’s performance. “We have work to do and this will start tomorrow.”

Wedekind dominated the race, using a time of 16:26.08 to win the competition. It was the first time that a Wildcat has finished first in a competition since she won the J.K. Gold Classic Duals in 2014. Junior Kayla Doll also recorded a top-five finish, taking fifth with a time of 16:53.65, while freshman Katie Condon recorded her first top-10 finish of her career, placing seventh with a time of 16:57.41.

“I thought Morgan ran well,” Godfrey said. “I was also really impressed with Katie tonight.”

Junior Colton Donahue opened his 2016 campaign with a top-five finish, taking fourth place with a time of 19:14.98. Fellow junior Bryan Zack finished in the top-10 after running a time of 19:24.94 to finish in eighth place.

The Wildcats had three more runners finish inside the top 15, as sophomore Joe Gorthy took 12th place with a time of 19:35.66, senior Kain Ellis took 13th place with a time of 19:35.94 and junior Sam Oxandale finished in 15th place with a final mark of 19:48.66.

“Colton had an okay race tonight,” Godfrey said. “Both Bryan and Kain really impressed me tonight.”

The Wildcats return to action on September 17 as the team travels to Lincoln, Nebraska, to compete in the Woody Greeno Invitational. The race is slated to begin at 10 a.m. CT.
