Weldon, Spolander finish in Top 15 at Rod Myers Invitational

DURHAM, N.C. – Led by senior Kyle Weldon and sophomore transfer Oscar Spolander, the Kansas State men’s golf team turned in a final-round score of 20-over par 308 Sunday to finish eighth in the Rod Myers Invitational at the par-72, 7,136-yard Duke University Club. The Wildcats finished with a 54-hole score of 25-over par 889.

Weldon led K-State throughout the event as he notched three birdies and carded an even-par 72 on Sunday. The senior finished the tournament in a tie for fifth at 2-under-par 214. Spolander, a transfer from West Texas A&M, highlighted the final round for the Wildcats as he tallied four birdies and carded a 1-under par 71 in Sunday’s final round. He tied for 12th with a three-round total 2-over par 218.

“Kyle and Oscar played really well today,” head coach Grant Robbins said. “The course was playing much tougher, and they did a great job minimizing their mistakes. It wasn’t a good day for us as a team. We had three rounds in the 80s, so we were not able to take advantage of Kyle and Oscar’s strong play.”

Connor Knabe tied for 47th with a three-round total 13-over par 229. Matt Green finished the tournament at 16-over par 232 to tie for 58th, while Jeremy Gandon was right behind him in 60th place at 17-over par 233.

“It is a long season and there are a lot of positives to build on,” Robbins said. “We are looking forward to the competition when we get home as we prepare for Iowa.”

Wake Forest took home the top team honors after firing a 2-under par 862, one stroke ahead of second-place Duke. Wake Forest’s Will Zalatoris was the individual champion, carding an 8-under par 208.

The Wildcats will return to action Sept. 25-27, as they head to Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, Iowa, for the Golfweek Conference Challenge.
