Weldon, Valadez Advance in U.S. Open Qualifying

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Recent K-State graduate men’s golfer Kyle Weldon and incoming freshman Levi Valadez have each advanced to sectional qualifying for the 116th U.S. Open Championship, which will be held June 16-19, at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania.

Weldon was the medalist at the St. Louis local qualifier at Forest Hills Country Club in Chesterfield, Missouri, on May 10. He won the event with a 2-under par 68 thanks to birdies on Nos. 1, 7 and 10. The Des Peres, Missouri, native will be playing in his fourth sectional qualifier.

Valadez tied for third at Cedar Creek Golf Club on Thursday in the San Antonio local qualifier. He carded an 18-hole total of 70, one shot behind the medalists.

Often referred to as “Golf’s Longest Day,” sectional qualifying will be conducted over 36 holes on Monday, June 6, at 10 sites throughout the United States. Weldon will compete in Memphis, Tennessee, at either Germantown Country Club or Ridgeway Country Club, while Valadez will be notified of his location later this week.

Weldon and Valadez are hoping to join another former Wildcat in Robert Streb, who is exempt from local and sectional qualifying and will be part of the 2016 U.S. Open Championship field due to his qualification into the season-ending 2015 Tour Championship.
