Wildcats Advance to Doubles Quarterfinals in USTA Clay Court Invitational

Day Two Results

ORLANDO, Fla.  -- Sophomore Carolina Costamagna and freshman Ana Garcia Navas advanced to the quarterfinals of the Gold Doubles Draw on day two of the USTA Clay Court Invitational at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

The pair of Wildcats defeated UCF's Sofia Baptista and Caroline Eberhart 8-1 in the round of 16 and are now 2-0 as partners.

"Ana and Caro did an excellent job of shaking off the morning and responded well in doubles," explained K-State assistant coach Jordan Smith. "They continued their aggressive play from yesterday and never gave the opponents a chance to get in to the match. It was solid tennis from them tonight."

Garcia Navas and Costamagna had to refocus after each dropped their second round singles matches at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress earlier in the day. Garcia Navas lost to Martina Frantova of North Carolina State 6-3, 6-2 while Costamagna fell to Florida's Spencer Liang 6-2, 6-3. Each will play one consolation singles match on Saturday.

"This morning, they faced some tougher competition and unfortunately the singles matches didn't go our way," said Smith. "We still need to do a better job at giving ourselves more opportunities out there, by making the right strategic choices. We have definitely improved at this since August, and I know we will keep getting better at this as we start our spring season with more high-level matches."

The duo's quarterfinals doubles match is set for 4 p.m. ET on Saturday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. They will face Maria Fernanda Navarro and Daniela Ruiz Alvarez of Clemson.
