NEW YORK -- Despite Carolina Costamagna and Millie Stretton picking up a doubles win over a ranked opponent, No. 70 K-State women's tennis lost to No. 50 Columbia, 6-1, on Friday at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center in its first of this weekend's back-to-back matches.

The Wildcats (5-3) began the dual winning the doubles point when Costamagna and Stretton topped No. 57 Rima Asatrian and Alexandria Solovyev 7-6 (4) in the No. 1 position. For the K-State sophomore and freshman, it was their fourth win together this spring. The Wildcats went on to clinch the point when Sara Castellano and Palma Juhasz earned the victory in the No. 3 position, taking down Andrea Kevakian and Star Makarome 6-2.

Although it secured the early first point, K-State was unable to pick up a singles win for the first time all season. For Columbia (6-3), it was the third time this year it had won every singles match in a dual.

Stretton lost her first career singles match in a dual as she fell in a tough three sets, 0-6, 7-5, 6-4, to Andrea Kevakian in the No. 5 position. The freshman dropped to 7-1 on the season.

Livia Cirnu also went to three sets in the No. 6 position, but ultimately fell to Vivian Cheng 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5.

The top-four positions were all completed in straight sets, with Costamagna (No. 3) and Iva Bago (No. 4) going to a tiebreaker in the first set.

The Wildcats continue play in New York on Saturday when they take on Memphis at 1 p.m.
