Wildcats Capture Top-Three Finish in Arizona

PEORIA, Ariz. – The Kansas State women’s golf team notched its second top-three finish of the season as the Wildcats finished the Westbrook Invitational in third place following final-round play on Monday at the par-72, 6,269-yard Westbrook Village Golf Club. As a team, the Wildcats shot an even-par final round and tallied a 54-hole score of 3-under par 861. K-State’s 54-hole total was its lowest since shooting a 14-under par 850 in the 2014 Johnie Imes Invitational.

"This was a first-class field and the ladies did very well," K-State head coach Kristi Knight said. "I am proud of their effort. We have always known that those scores were there, so we have the potential to be very dangerous in the near future."

The Wildcats were led by sophomore Connie Jaffrey, who tied for third by carding a season low 4-under par 212, just one shot back of the winning score of 5-under par 211. Jaffrey’s score was the fourth lowest 54-hole total in school history, while she also earned the fourth top-five finish in her career. She did not record a round over par as she finished the final round at even-par 72.

Junior Katherine Gravel-Coursol also placed in the top 10, finishing in eighth place after shooting a new career best 54-hole score of 3-under par 213, which tied for the fifth-lowest total in school history. Gravel-Cousol also earned her second career top-10 finish thanks to 1-over par 73 in the final round.

Junior Madison Talley recorded her eighth under-par round with the 71 she shot in the final day of play. Talley shot a 1-over par 217 to tie for 23rd. Junior Paige Nelson finished with a 4-over par 220 to tie for 37th place, while freshman Chloe Weir tied for 56th place by carding an 8-over par 233.

K-State finished the event seven shots back of 30th-ranked Oregon, which carded a 10-under 854 for the team championship. The Wildcats finished better than four other ranked teams, including No. 16 San Diego State, which finished in eighth place at 5-over par 896.

Tying for the individual title was San Diego State’s Emma Henrikson and Wisconsin’s Brooke Ferrell as the par finished play at 5-under par 211.

The Wildcats will be back in action March 18-19, as they travel to Tucson, Arizona, to compete in the Mountain View Collegiate.
