Wildcats Close out Regular Season with Three Home Matches

MANHATTAN, Kan. -- K-State women's tennis will play three straight home matches at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium to close out the regular season this weekend as it hosts Southern Illinois and No. 14 Oklahoma State on Friday followed by Oklahoma on Sunday.

The Wildcats (9-11, 1-6 Big 12) are 4-4 at home this year while the Salukis (13-9, 5-0 MVC) are 5-7 on the road. The Cowgirls (19-4, 7-0 Big 12) are 4-1 in road matches and the Sooners (7-12, 2-5 Big 12) are 2-7 away from Norman.

Junior Livia Cirnu and freshman Millie Stretton own the two best home records for the Wildcats. Cirnu is a perfect 7-0 in home contests, including a 6-0 mark in the No. 6 spot while Stretton holds a 6-2 record in Manhattan and 4-0 in the No. 5 position.

Stretton also earned her 20th win of the season last weekend when she defeated Nina Khmelnitckaia of KU on Saturday. She has competed in positions 2-6 this year and has earned a 14-5 record in dual match play.

"We are excited to host three matches this weekend," explained K-State head coach Danielle Steinberg. "Even though these are our final regular season matches, I still feel like we are improving and every weekend is another opportunity for us to get better. We have been focusing on the process all year, and that does not change for us, even when we are nearing the final stretch."

Southern Illinois is led by Ana Sofia Cordero who has notched a 14-6 record in dual match singles. The junior has earned her wins in the No. 3 and 4 positions.

In doubles play for the Salukis, Cordero is paired with Xiwei Cai and the duo has a team-high nine wins, all at the No. 1 spot.

Oklahoma State, which has already clinched a share of the Big 12 title, has the most ranked singles players and doubles partners on a single roster in the Big 12 with three of each.

In singles, No. 44 Vladica Babic, No. 46 Katarina Adamovic and No. 63 Viktoriya Lushkova hold 3-1, 2-2 and 4-1 records, respectively, in Big 12 play.

No. 40 Kelsey Laurente and Maria Alvarez, No. 50 Carla Tur Mari and Lushkova, and No. 63 Babic and Adamovic are the three ranked duos that compete for the Cowgirls. Pairs Tur Mari and Lushkova in the No. 2 position along with Babic and Adamovic in the No. 3 position each have a perfect 7-0 record in conference action.

The Sooners hold the No. 70 ranked duo with Lily Miyazaki and Emma Devine, who are 4-3 in conference at the No. 1 position.

Following this weekend's matches, the Wildcats will compete in the Big 12 Championship in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The tournament starts on Thursday, April 28.
