Wildcats Drop Match to Cyclones, 4-2

AMES, Iowa -- In the first leg of a two-match road trip, K-State women's tennis was defeated, 4-2, at Iowa State on Friday at the Forker Tennis Courts.

After dropping the doubles point to the Cyclones (14-4, 2-1 Big 12) and matches at No. 1 and 5 in singles, the Wildcats (8-10, 0-5 Big 12) earned two singles wins by Carolina Costamagna and Millie Stretton to pull the overall match to 3-2 before falling to Iowa State.

Costamagna picked up her sixth win in the No. 3 position with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Alejandra Galvis. The junior is now 7-8 in dual play.

Stretton defeated Regina Espindola 6-2, 6-3 to earn her first win at the No. 4 spot. The freshman improved to a team-best 12-5 in dual match play.

In doubles play, Stretton and Ana Garcia Navas won the only match for K-State, taking down Samantha Budai and Liza Buss 6-3 in the No. 1 position. The victory was the freshman duo's second straight win as they improved to 2-2 at No. 1.

Sara Castellano lost in her return to action as she fell to Liza Buss 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 2 position. The redshirt sophomore last competed on March 14 against Wichita State.

Also competing for the Wildcats in singles were Garcia Navas and Livia Cirnu. Garcia Navas lost at No. 1 to Budai 6-0, 6-4 while Cirnu was leading Ana Gasparovic 6-2, 3-0 in a match that went unfinished.

The Wildcats continue play on the road on Sunday as they visit West Virginia (6-9, 0-4 Big 12) at Ridgeview Racquet Club in Morgantown, West Virginia at 9 a.m. (CT).
