Wildcats Earn Sixth Consecutive AVCA Team Academic Award

MANHATTAN, Kan. – For the sixth straight year, K-State volleyball earned the Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), the organization announced.

The honor, which is given to programs with a team GPA of 3.30 or higher during the academic year, is the 14th in K-State volleyball history. The streak of six in a row is also the second-longest for the Wildcats, following the span of seven straight from 2001-08.

The team accolade caps another strong academic year for the Wildcats. In total, the group had seven named Academic All-Big 12 (including six first team), 12 earned Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll in the fall and 16 in the spring, two received CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team honors, three picked up Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team accolades, and one, Kersten Kober, garnered the Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. Kober, who has maintained a 4.0 GPA in her career, was the first K-State volleyball student-athlete in program history to earn the scholar-athlete of the year honor.

The AVCA Team Academic Award, which was initiated in 1992-93, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative GPA on a 5.0 scale. This year, a record 762 teams received the award, including 131 from the NCAA Division I Women division.

K-State was one of two Big 12 schools (Baylor) to earn the Team Academic Award.

The Wildcats, who return all of its starters from last year’s NCAA Tournament team and 11 total letterwinners, open their season on August 26 against Arizona in the Wahine Invitational at Hawaii. The home opener against Michigan is on September 2.
