COLUMBIA, Mo. -- K-State women's tennis earned singles wins from Millie Stretton and Livia Cirnu but was unable to keep pace with Missouri on Wednesday as the Wildcats lost the dual 5-2 at Mizzou Tennis Complex.

Stretton, playing in the No. 6 position for the Wildcats (3-2), won her seventh straight singles match by defeating Missouri's (7-0) Clare Raley 3-6, 6-2, 10-7. The freshman remains undefeated in dual match singles with a 5-0 mark.

Cirnu won her third straight singles match, taking the first set against Brittany Lashway 6-4 before Lashway retired while up 3-2 in the second.

"I think we played tough in most of the singles positions, and we put ourselves in a position to win a two and four, but we came up just a little bit short," said K-State head coach Danielle Steinberg. "We are going to learn from this match and use the next 10 days to get better."

In the No. 1 position, Sara Castellano lost to Bea Machado Santos in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, while Ana Garcia Navas dropped a hard-fought three-set match to Brianna Lashway 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 2 position.

Competing in the No. 3 position, Carolina Costamagna was defeated by Kelli Hine 6-1, 6-1 and in the No. 4 position, Iva Bago lost to Cassidy Spearman 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.

In doubles play, partners Garcia Navas and Bago fell to Spearman and Brianna Lashway 6-4 in the No. 2 position. In No. 3 doubles, Castellano and Maria Panaite dropped their match to Brittany Lashway and Raley 6-3.

Costamagna and Stretton did not finish their match against a formerly nationally ranked duo, Hine and Machado Santos. The K-State pair was up 6-5 before Mizzou clinched the doubles point with a win at No. 3.

"We did not come out with the same fire and intensity today as we did in the previous matches, and we cannot afford to do that against good teams," added Steinberg. "We made our way back into the doubles after falling behind pretty quickly, but Missouri played aggressive and closed out the point."

With more than a week before their next set of matches, the Cats will head back to Manhattan to host Air Force (3-3) and Drake (4-2) on February 20 and 21.
