MANHATTAN, Kan. -- K-State women's tennis came up short against No. 58 Denver on Friday at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium to lose its first home match of the season.

The Wildcats got singles wins by Iva Bago, Millie Stretton and Livia Cirnu in the No. 4, 5 and 6 positions, respectively, as they took down Evy Van Genechten, Morgan Barnhill and Charlotte Derbyshire.

However, a loss of the doubles point to start the afternoon followed by Denver wins at the No. 1, 2 and 3 positions resulted in K-State's second loss to a ranked opponent in as many weeks.

"Today's windy conditions were tough, and I think Denver handled it much better than we did," explained K-State head coach Danielle Steinberg. "Credit goes to them for that."

With the win, Stretton now has a team-high nine dual match singles victories and has won nine of her last 10 contests.

Cirnu won her seventh dual match of the season, second most on the team behind Stretton, and has won eight of her last 10 matches overall.

Bago won her fifth dual match of the year after going 0-2 last weekend.

"Both Iva and Livia had a tougher weekend last weekend," said K-State head coach Danielle Steinberg. "I am really happy with how they came out today and mainly with their positive attitude."

Palma Juhasz and Sara Castellano were able to capture the first doubles match of the day for the Wildcats (6-4) by defeating Derbyshire and Van Genechten, 6-1. The Pioneers (10-2) would then capture the doubles point, though, by taking the next two matches.

"We did not make the right choices in the doubles early on, and against good teams we simply cannot afford to do that," said Steinberg. "Obviously the doubles point was huge today and ultimately cost us the match. I think we are a strong doubles team, but we have to be stubborn about our game plan and make the right choices."

The Wildcats play again on Sunday as they host No. 50 SMU at 11 a.m.
