Wildcats Fall to Red Raiders, 4-0

LUBBOCK, Texas -- K-State women's tennis was swept on Friday as it fell to No. 13 Texas Tech 4-0 at the Lubbock Country Club.

The Wildcats (8-8, 0-3 Big 12) had another shift in the lineup against the Red Raiders (16-2, 1-1 Big 12) as Carolina Costamagna returned to singles play. The sophomore competed in the No. 2 position, losing to Sarah Dvorak 6-2, 6-1.

Ana Garcia Navas remained in the No. 1 spot, where she lost to No. 122 Gabriela Talaba 6-3, 6-2.

Millie Stretton moved back to the No. 3 position where she fell to Alex Valenstein 6-2, 6-2. The freshman is now 0-2 in the third spot and 11-4 in dual match play this season.

"We created the right situations in singles but did not always execute well or make the right choices in the big points," explained K-State head coach Danielle Steinberg. "After a few times of doing that, the opponent will get confident and all of a sudden the match has a completely different rhythm to it. We are getting the points set up like we want it though, which is encouraging, and I think making better choices is something that will develop with time and practice."

In doubles, K-State kept the combination of Stretton and Garcia Navas in the No. 1 position, but the freshmen lost to Talaba and Balenstein 6-2. The duo is now 0-2 in the No. 1 position and 0-3 in dual match play.

Palma Juhasz and Cirnu were paired up in the No. 3 position, where they were beaten by Lynn Kiro and Maltby 6-2. The loss was their first together in dual match doubles this year.

The pair of Costamagna and Iva Bago were up 4-3 at No. 2, but their match went unfinished as Texas Tech clinched the point.

"We started slow on all three courts in doubles, and we really cannot afford to do that against teams of this caliber," explained Steinberg. "We were able to get back on court two and they played great doubles, which we were happy about."

The Wildcats continue play in Texas as they take on No. 35 TCU in Fort Worth at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on Sunday at 1 p.m.
