K-State Falls at SMU

DALLAS - The Kansas State women’s tennis team lost at SMU, 5-2, on Saturday at the SMU Tennis Complex.

The Wildcats (8-8) scored points from two singles wins from Ana Garcia Navas and Livia Cirnu, but did not have enough to keep pace with the Mustangs (13-3).

The Wildcats are now 3-4 away from home.

In doubles play, Carolina Costamagna/Ines Mesquita picked up a win at Court No. 2 by shutting out Liza Buss/Macie Elliott, 6-0. However, the Mustangs won on the other two courts to give themselves the doubles point.

The Wildcats fell to down 2-0 after SMU’s Mary Wright defeated Maria Panaite, 6-2, 6-1, at singles No. 6.

Garcia Navas, then came back with her singles win over Ana Perez-Lopez, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 4. The victory was her third straight.

SMU pulled away with wins from Buss and Sarai Monarrez Yesaki. Buss took down Costamagna at No. 1, while Yesaki beat Millie Stretton at No. 2. Both wins came in straight sets and would clinch the match win for SMU.

Cirnu continued her strong season with a three-set win against Charline Anselmo, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 5. With the win, Cirnu tied her career-high of 13 dual singles wins in a season.

Lastly, Mesquita dropped a close match to Perez-Lopez, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, at No 3.

The Wildcats will play again Sunday at UT Arlington with first serve being at 11 a.m.
