Wildcats Fall to Washington State

Pullman, Wash. -- Kansas State women's tennis lost its first dual match of the spring, 5-2, against Washington State at Hollingbery Fieldhouse on Friday.

Despite the defeat for the Wildcats (1-1), the two freshmen Ana Garcia Navas and Millie Stretton were each able to earn singles wins against the Cougars (5-0).

"I was definitely happy with the fighting attitude we showed today," explained K-State head coach Danielle Steinberg. "The season is so young and in some positions we are still learning how to play a dual match and how our game needs to look, but the willingness to outwork our opponent and the fighting mentality was there today and I am very pleased about that."

Garcia Navas competed in the No. 3 position and was able to take down Barbora Michalkova. After losing the first set 4-6, she took the next two matches 6-2, 6-3 to move to 2-0 in dual matches on the year and 8-4 overall in singles.

Competing in the No. 6 position, Stretton defeated Victoria Matejevic 7-5, 6-4 to win her fourth straight match and seventh of her last 10.

Others competing in singles were Sara Castellano, Carolina Costamagna, Iva Bago and Livia Cirnu who each dropped their respective matches. Costamagna was defeated by the No. 83 ranked player in the nation, Donika Bashota, 6-2, 6-2.

The Wildcats were unable to capture a doubles victory as duos Costamagna and Stretton along with Garcia Navas and Bago lost in the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, respectively. Castellano and Maria Panaite did not complete their match.

"We have a very quick turnaround and a tough match tomorrow," said Steinberg. "North Texas is a young and very talented team, but we are looking better every time we step on the court and I am excited to see how we come out tomorrow."

K-State will continue play in Pullman as they take on North Texas at Hollingbery Fieldhouse on Saturday at 12 p.m. (CT).
