Wildcats go 5-3 on Day Two of ITA Regionals

Day Two Results

STILLWATER, Okla. – Sara Castellano, Carolina Costamagna and Ana Garcia Navas all opened Friday with wins at the ITA Central Regional Championship, but the trio of the Wildcats fell in their respective second match of the day at Greenwood Tennis Center to drop from the main draws of the tournament.

Costamagna started her day with a victory over 96th-ranked Shannon Hudson of Arkansas (7-5, 2-6, 6-2) while Castellano earned her eighth career win at the ITA regionals by defeating Mehvish Safdar of Minnesota 6-2, 6-3. Garcia Navas, meanwhile, stretched her winning streak to five matches with a three-set victory over Missouri’s Brittany Lashway 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

In the second slate of matches on the day, each Wildcat fell in straight sets. Costamagna dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to KU’s Smith Hinton, Castellano lost 6-4, 7-6 to Summer Collins of KU, and Garcia Navas was taken down by Tulsa’s Ksenia Laskatova 6-2, 6-3.

“This is why the ITA regional is such a tough and great tournament,” explained K-State head coach Danielle Steinberg. “Every opponent we play is at the highest level, and we need to be ready to play multiple high-quality matches in the same day.”

Iva Bago was the fourth Wildcat to compete on Saturday as the junior grabbed a pair of singles wins in consolation matches. She defeated Tori Roberts of Arkansas State 6-2, 6-1 to open the morning and then downed Elif Gabb of South Dakota State 6-0, 6-0.

For the day, K-State went a combined 5-3, matching its win-loss record in singles and doubles from Thursday.

“Everyone did incredible in the first match this morning - Caro had a big win over a ranked player, Ana battled a tough three-setter, and Sara took care of business,” said Steinberg. “In the second match of the day, we did not come out as strong and did not always make the best strategy choices, but this is why we have the fall schedule and these matches can only make us better, win or lose.”

The Wildcats wrap up the weekend in Stillwater with a slate of consolation matches on Saturday. Next weekend, K-State is set to participate in the Drake Jamboree.
