Wildcats, Green Near Top of Leaderboard at Bill Ross Intercollegiate

RAYMORE, Mo. – The Kansas State men’s golf team was led by a 5-under par 139 performance from senior Matt Green, which helped the Wildcats to a fourth-place standing through the first two rounds of the Bill Ross Intercollegiate Monday at the par-72, 7,156-yard Creekmoor Golf Club. 

The Wildcats finished the day with a 36-hole score of 5-over par 581 as they started out the tournament with a 3-under par 285 to finish the first round in second place. However, K-State hit adversity in the second round and has work to do in Tuesday’s final round.

The solid outing from Green featured nine birdies in the first 36 holes as he is tied for second place with Missouri State’s Adam Fisher. The Lenexa, Kansas, product, who carded a 3-under par 69 in the first round, is only two strokes behind leader Jake Chanen of Grand Canyon heading into the final round of competition on Tuesday.

After finishing the season-opening tournament in a tie for third, sophomore Jeremy Gandon found himself in an unusual spot as the Charpey, France, standout carded a 2-over par 146 on the opening day to enter final-round play in a tie for 19th. Senior Jack Rickabaugh added to the scoring for the Wildcats with a 3-over par 147 score after two rounds of play to sit in a tie for 22nd. Freshmen Ben Fernandez and Jacob Eklund posted identical scores of 6-over par 150 and are tied for 32nd. 

Competing as individuals, sophomore Roland Massimino and freshman Levi Valadez both found success. Massimino is currently tied for 13th as the Lumberville, Pennsylvania, native carded a 1-over par 145 on Monday. Playing in his first collegiate tournament, Valadez is currently tied for 32nd after a 6-over par 150 performance.

Grand Canyon leads the event at 3-under par 573, three strokes ahead of second-place team Stephen F. Austin and seven strokes in front of UMKC.

The Wildcats hope to improve Tuesday as they begin the final round of the Bill Ross Intercollegiate at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring from Raymore can be found at www.golfstat.com, with final scores posted to www.kstatesports.com  following play on Tuesday.
