Wildcats Have Strong First Day at ITA Regional Championship

MINNEAPOLIS- The K-State women’s tennis team opened up play at the ITA Regional Championship on Thursday picking up six individual wins in the opening round.

Maria Panaite defeated Morgan Brower of South Dakota State in her first match of the tournament, 6-1, 7-5. Panaite advances to the round of 64 and will play Vladica Babic of Oklahoma State on Friday.

Fellow senior Palma Juhasz beat Barbara Kollarova of South Dakota 6-3, 6-2. She advances and will play Katarina Stresnakova of Oklahoma State in the next round.  

Also winning for the Wildcats on Thursday was Ana Garcia Navas. She defeated Nebraska’s Hayley Haakenstad, 6-2, 6-4. Garcia Navas will face off against Maria Espindola of Iowa State on Friday.

Iva Bago also came out victorious in her first round defeating Joely Lomas of Drake, 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-0. She will play Mia Jurasic of Arkansas in the round of 64.

Sophomore Millie Stetton also advanced to the next round Thursday. She beat Kenya Williams of Drake, 6-3, 6-4. She will face Sofia Blanco of Oklahoma State on Friday.

Finishing out the first day, Carolina Costamagna beat UMKC’s Yana Garechkina, 6-3, 6-1. She will take on Ally McKenzie of St. Louis on Friday.

Each Wildcat will play singles again Friday in their respective match-ups throughout the day. Three Wildcat doubles teams will begin their play in Minneapolis Friday morning as well. Competition will begin at 8.am.
