Wildcats Open 2015-16 Campaign at Home

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's golf team opens its 2015-16 season at home as the Wildcats will compete in the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational, Monday and Tuesday, at the par-72, 6,243-yard Colbert Hills Golf Course.

The tournament will consist of 36 holes with an 8:30 a.m., start on Monday followed by 18 holes on Tuesday with an 8:15 a.m., start. The Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational is a tournament that is rotated between Lawrence and Manhattan and the event is free and open to the public.

K-State, the event’s defending champion, will have all six members of the team competing in the opening event of the season with Madison Talley, Scotland Preston, Paige Nelson, Connie Jaffrey and Katherine Gravel-Coursol making up the scoring lineup. Freshman Chloe Weir will participate as an individual.

“We are excited to have these teams at Colbert Hills and K-State,” head coach Kristi Knight said. “I appreciate the efforts of the golf course staff and K-State Athletics staff. I think the team is ready to get the season started. We like the effort and attitude we have seen at practice and in workouts the first two weeks.”

Last year the Wildcats took home their first of two team victories at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational and placed three individuals in the top five, including Jaffrey (4th) and Talley (T5th).

Kansas State will be joined in the 2015 version of the event by 11 other teams, which includes Arkansas-Little Rock, Central Arkansas, Florida Gulf Coast, Kansas, Middle Tennessee State, Missouri, Nebraska, Redlands CC, SMU, Stephen F. Austin and TCU.

“We want to focus our energy and attention on the things that we can control, such as preparation and attitude,” Knight said. “Now it’s time to go play golf, and that’s the fun part.”
