Wildcats Open Spring Camp With Race Against Tulsa

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Fresh off a competitive season-opening scrimmage with conference-rival Oklahoma, the Kansas State women’s rowing team will kick off its week-long spring camp with a head-to-head race with the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes on Saturday on the Verdigris River.

Saturday’s race marks the third-straight head-to-head meeting between the Wildcats and the Golden Hurricanes, dating back to the 2014-15 competition season.

“We are going to look at some different lineups this weekend,” head coach Patrick Sweeney said. “Then, in camp afterwards, we are going to really hone in on the water work. I hope by the end of camp, we are saying ‘This is the starting lineup. This is where we are going to be for the rest of the season.’”

K-State could not be happier with the time it has had on the water this season and it showed in the team’s last race, as the Wildcats got in strong reps in the morning session against the Sooners, which varied in distances and number of strokes. The afternoon session of the scrimmage was eventually cancelled due to strong winds.

“The Oklahoma scrimmage told us a lot,” Sweeney added. “We managed to see a lot of things. I was really happy and pleased with where we were. But we are still sort of in that same mold. Hopefully, from the Oklahoma race, it is just a continuation of where we were before. I am hoping it has not really changed much. That race enabled us to look at different lineups, mainly because we are still in the process of looking at what different combinations work.”

During last season’s meeting between K-State and Tulsa, the Wildcats’ 1V8 dominated the competition, taking first place with a time of 8:03.5, just under five seconds faster than Golden Hurricanes’ B boat, which took second place in the race with a time of 8:08.1. The Wildcats went on to take second place in each of the other three races during the 2016 scrimmage.

Saturday’s action is set to begin noon, with races scheduled to begin throughout the afternoon.
