Wildcats Set For New Mexico Team Invitational

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State track and field team will leave the state of Kansas for the first time this season as the Wildcats travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to compete in the New Mexico Team Invitational in the Albuquerque Convention Center on Saturday.

K-State is set to face stout competition at the meet, squaring off against Big 12 foes TCU and Texas Tech, as well as former conference rival Nebraska. Also competing in the meet are Air Force, California, Colorado State, Utah State and host New Mexico.

The Wildcats will look to continue their success as they head into the middle part of the indoor schedule. The team saw 10 first-place finishes as they swept the competition at the DeLoss Dodds Invitational last weekend in Ahearn Field House.

Senior Akela Jones’ performance in the pentathlon highlighted the meet as she fell just 35 points short of the NCAA pentathlon record with a score of 4,643. The record of 4,678 points was set by Kendell Williams at last season’s NCAA Indoor Championships.

At last season’s New Mexico Team Invitational, the Wildcats saw multiple athletes perform well in their respective events as the women finished in fourth place with 79.50 points and the men finished in the fifth place with a team score of 59 points.

Competition in the field is set to begin at 10 a.m. CT with the women’s weight throw. Track events will begin at 11 a.m. CT with the women’s 600 meter run.
