Wildcats Sign Two Men’s Golfers for 2016-17

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State men’s golf coach Grant Robbins announced Friday the signing of two golfers to National Letters of Intent as Jacob Eklund and Levi Valadez will join the Wildcats beginning with the 2016-17 season.

“We are very excited about adding Jacob and Levi to our K-State Golf Family,” Robbins said. “Not only are they very talented, it is their character and work ethic that really set them apart. Both will be a great fit at K-State and we look forward to working with them.”

Eklund, a senior at Carterville High School in Carbondale, Illinois, is ranked second in the state of Illinois and in the top-200 nationally in the class of 2016 by Golfweek. He recorded six top-10 finishes in AJGA events in 2014 and 2015, including top-five finishes in the 2015 AJGA Memorial Junior, the 2014 AJGA Bass Pro Junior and the 2014 AJGA St. Louis Junior. Eklund is also a member of his high school basketball team at Carterville.

“Jacob is a tremendous player who really stood out to us in the recruiting process due to his high character and intense competitiveness,” Robbins said. “He is extremely talented and a very hard worker and will be a great fit in our program.”

Currently ranked 33rd nationally in the class of 2016 by Golfweek, Valadez comes to K-State from San Antonio, Texas. A senior at Alamo Heights High School, he finished fourth in the 2015 Texas 5A High School State Championship and is currently ranked sixth in the state of Texas by Golfweek. The senior is a two-time qualifier for the U.S. Junior Amateur and tallied four top-10 finishes in AJGA events in 2014-2015.

“Levi is a very accomplished player who demonstrated this summer that he can play with just about anyone,” Robbins said. “We were really attracted to his work ethic and the way he goes about his preparation. He is a very mature young man who will have a great impact here both on and off the course.”

K-State will be back in action this spring as the Wildcats will travel to Mobile, Alabama, for the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, Feb. 22-23, 2016.
