Wildcats Solid at UCLA Legends Invitational

Final Results

MANHATTAN, Kan.
– Six first-place finishes highlighted the final day of competition as the Wildcats closed out the UCLA Legends Invitational at the UCLA Drake Stadium on Saturday. 

The women’s side finished in second place with 124.5 points, while the men took third place with 94 points. UCLA’s men and women both won the meet with scores of 185.333 points and 173.5, respectively. 

Senior Akela Jones, in her first outdoor competition of the season, recorded first-place finishes in both the 100 meter hurdles (13.36) and high jump (1.90m/6-02.75). Fellow senior Tia’ Gamble also finished in first place in the 400 meter dash with a personal best time of 54.12. 

Both were members of the 4x400 meter relay team, which also consisted of freshman Ranae McKenzie and sophomore A’Keyla Mitchell, which finished in first place with a time of 3:37.35. 

Sophomore Devie Freeman II and junior Kaneil Harrison each set personal bests in the 200 meter dash with times of 21.79 and 21.94, respectively. 

The distance runners also had a solid meet. In the 800 meter run, senior Sonia Gaskin finished in second place with a time of 2:10.44, while Kain Ellis took fourth in the men’s race with a time of 1:51.44. In the 1500 meter run, Lukas Koch set a new personal best with a time of 3:53.50 to finish third. Sophomore Kayla Doll also took third with a time of 4:43.87. 

The Wildcats were equally successful in the field. Junior pole vaulter Zack Supple set a new personal best after recording a jump of 5.11m/16-09.25. Newcomer Shadae Lawrence also recorded a win in women’s discus throw with a mark of 56.40m/185-00. 

Javelin throwers Allison Zerbe and Derek Selk each recorded second-place finishes in the javelin throw. Selk recorded a personal best throw in the event with a mark of 60.45m/198-04, while Zerbe recorded a throw of  46.03m/151-00. 

Overall, K-State finished the meet with nine first place finishes and had one school record broken.

The Wildcats return to action next week as they travel to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to compete in the LSU Battle on the Bayou. More information on the meet can be found here.
