Wildcats Start Strong at SMU Invite

DALLAS - In the second tournament of the season, the K-State women’s tennis team opened the weekend with numerous first-round wins at the SMU Invite. 

 

Millie Stretton and Maria Panaite both won in their respected singles first round-matches. Stretton defeated Fabienne Gettwart of Sam Houston State 6-3, 7-6. She advances to take on Gonzaga’s Nevada Apollo. Panaite advanced against Whitney Williams of Abilene Christian 6-1, 3-6, 7-6. She will face off against Sveva Mazzari of Houston in Saturday’s competition. 

 

Coming off their doubles championship last weekend at the OU Invite, Ana Garcia Navas and Millie Stetton advanced Friday by defeating Astrid Gehre/Jessica Birowski of UT-Arlington, 6-1. They will take on Ana Perez/Sarai Monarrez of SMU in the semifinals on Saturday. 


Also winning their doubles match Friday was the tandem Liva Cirnu and Iva Bago. They beat the SHSU duo Ema Barkovic/Mila Milanovic 6-4. They will play Elizabeth Barnickel/Nadeen Lieberman of Air Force next in the semifinals. 

 

The Wildcats will continue competing on Saturday in Dallas starting at 11 a.m. They will wrap up play at the SMU Invite Sunday, October 9.
