Wildcats Strong at Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational

Final Results

LINCOLN, Neb.
– After a strong day of competition on Friday, Kansas State saw four more athletes set personal bests and one school record be broken as the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational came to a close at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Saturday.

With the four personal bests set on Saturday, the Wildcats finished the overall competition with eight athletes recording PRs and three first-place finishes.

After qualifying for the 60 meter hurdles in Friday’s preliminary round with a time of 8.20, senior Akela Jones set a new personal record and a new school record with a time of 8.05 to win the event. Her mark also ties for the second-best mark in the NCAA this season.

The 4x400 relay team of Sonia Gaskin, A’Keyla Mitchell, Jones and Tia’ Gamble barely missed the meet record as the team recorded a first-place finish in the event with a time of 3:35.91. The mark is the ninth best in Division I this season. It is also the third best mark in school history.

Distance runners Morgan Wedekind and Kayla Doll also set personal bests in their respective events. Wedekind recorded a time of 4:51.49 in the mile for a third-place finish, while Doll used a mark of 10:07.47 in the 3000m run to finish in third place. Freshman sprinter Nick Albus also set a new personal best in his seventh-place finish in the 200m dash.

The Wildcats then saw success in both the men’s and women’s 800 meter dashes. In the special section, junior Kain Ellis recorded a second-place finish with a time of 1:50.06. On the women’s side, Gaskin recorded a third-place finish with a time of 2:07.91. Gamble finished in second place in the 600 meter run with a time of 1:31.91. It was the first time Gamble has run the event this season.

The Wildcats return to action next weekend as the team travels to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to compete in the Tyson Invitational hosted by the University of Arkansas. The team will also send a few athletes to Ames, Iowa, to compete in the Iowa State Classic.
