Wildcats Sweep Missouri State in Dual Season Opener

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Kansas State women's tennis took down Missouri State, 7-0, at the Cooper Tennis Complex on Saturday to open the dual match season on a winning note.

"I am pretty pleased with our showing considering it is our first match," explained K-State head coach Danielle Steinberg.  "You always want to get those first match jitters out of the way and I am hoping we did just that today."

The Cats (1-0) started the day against the Bears (0-2) by earning the doubles point with wins in each of the three matches. First-time partners Carolina Costamagna and Millie Stretton defeated Ema Turudija and Phoebe Boeschen 6-3 while Ana Garcia Navas and Iva Bago beat Faty Khamissi and Anelisse Torrico Moreno 6-2 to improve to 3-1 this season as a duo. Sara Castellano and Maria Panaite, also first-time partners, took out Ekaterina Donetskova and Abbey Belote 6-2.

"Our doubles looked better then it did in practice, which is encouraging," said Steinberg. "The girls came out with a lot of energy and played aggressively throughout the doubles point and worked really well together. We obviously still have a long way to go, but the most encouraging aspect from today is that we were not even close to showing our true ability, and we were still able to come out strong in all the matches."

K-State also saw a win in each of the six singles matches played. Castellano (No. 1 position), Costamagna (No. 2), Garcia Navas (No. 3), Bago (No. 4), Stretton (No. 5) and Livia Cirnu (No. 6) all picked up victories.

Castellano earned her first win since competing in the ITA Regionals in mid-October and has won six out of her eight matches during the 2015-16 campaign.

Freshman Garcia Navas has now won seven of her last 10 single matches while classmate Stretton extended her winning streak to three and has won six out of nine matches.

Garcia Navas and Stretton also became the first K-State freshmen to earn a win in their first career singles match in dual play since Bago in 2013-14.

"We have a really important few days of practice ahead of us," Steinberg explained. "We need to get just a little better before we head out to Washington State."

K-State was originally slated to play two matches on Saturday, but its match against Evansville was cancelled due to inclement weather not allowing the Purple Aces to make the trip.

Next, the Wildcats head out to Pullman, Washington to compete against Washington State and North Texas on January 29 and 30 at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
