Wildcats Sweep the Falcons 7-0

MANHATTAN, Kan -- K-State women's tennis blanked an opponent for the second time this year as the Wildcats took down Air Force, 7-0, on Saturday at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium in their first outdoor match of the year.

Four of the six players competed in new singles positions for the Wildcats (4-2) against the Falcons (3-4), including freshman Ana Garcia Navas, who moved up to the No. 1 position and beat Mary Meyers 6-0, 6-2. Fellow freshman Millie Stretton, who moved up to the No. 5 position, defeated Jocelle Rudico 6-1, 6-4 for her eighth straight win.

Sara Castellano competed in the No. 2 position for the first time in her career, defeating Chloe Forlini 6-2, 6-1, while Livia Cirnu moved to the No. 6 position and won 3-6, 6-4, (10-7) over Elisa Nelson.

The other two singles wins for the Wildcats came from Iva Bago, who downed Lily Fornili 6-4, 6-1, and Carolina Costamagna, who took a tough match 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), (10-7) over Elizabeth Barnickel.

"It was our first outdoor match and it was good seeing the girls being able to adapt after practicing indoors all week," said K-State head coach Danielle Steinberg. "It was good to see the girls be able to play indoors one day and outdoors the next day because that will be important going forward in the season."

K-State took the doubles point with partners Costamagna and Stretton defeating Barnickel and Myers (6-4) while Garcia Navas and Bago knocked out C. Forlini and Rudico (6-3).

Palma Juhasz, competing for the first time this dual season, was paired up with Castellano in a match against L. Forlini and Nelson that went unfinished at 5-5.

"Air Force is a tough team," explained Steinberg. "They are very feisty and were fired up early. I think they play a little nonconventional, and I thought we handled it very well. We were ready, and we knew what was coming. Everyone came out with a good attitude and had good footwork so I am happy we took care of it."

The Wildcats play again on Sunday against Drake as they complete the back-to-back at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium. First serve is at 11 a.m.
