WILDCATS WALK THE PURPLE CARPET
It was a night where Nikes, boots the cleats were exchanged for high-high heels and dress shoes. At least for one night baseball player Jason King said, "It really is fun to see people in something other than sweatpants and t-shirts. It's definitely a change." Carmen Borau Ramos of the women's tennis team said, "I think that it's great that we all get dressed up and looking sharp, "or, as Kelsey Hill from the women's basketball team said, "We really can look like girls. We had girls go dress-shopping together, so it really is a fun occasion." It was a night to honor the top Wildcat student-athletes for the 2010-11 academic year (spring sports from 2010, and, fall and winter sports from 2010-11), for their excellence in the classroom, in competition and within the community. "This is a night where we honor out top student-athletes, but we also want to have fun," said Jason Schulte, president of the Student Advisory Athletic Committee and one of the founders of the event last year. "The student-athlete awards banquets of the past were always nice, but we wanted to make it more interactive and have some fun with it." New to the ceremony this year was the announcement of the Wildcat Cup Champion, whose criteria includes campus and community service projects, academic excellence and support for other programs within the department with their attendance.
"This was something we started to help build camaraderie within the teams in the department," said Schulte, who is a member of the K-State men's golf team. "Each team supports itself, but we wanted basketball players at baseball games, and golfers at equestrian events in an effort to support one another." While the award went to the women's basketball team, King said, "I think that was a great idea to get the teams to interact more. You usually just spend time with your own team, so the best thing about it was learning something about some of the other teams." Included among the top awards were baseball and women's basketball recognized as the Teams of the Year; women's basketball coach Deb Patterson as the Coach of the Year; while the Players of the Year went to basketball talents Jacob Pullen and Brittany Chambers. Moritz Cleve and Nina Kokot from the track and field program were recognized as the Scholar Athletes of the Year, and the Purple Pride Award went to Alex Hrebec of the football team.
