Wodtke Garners Big 12 Player of the Week

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State’s Jake Wodtke hit .727 and recorded 12 RBI in three games last weekend to lead the Big 12 and earn the league’s Player of the Week award for the period ending March 6, the conference office announced.

A native of Shawnee, Kansas, Wodtke went 8-for-11 in the sweep of Arkansas-Pine Bluff while his dozen runs driven in were four more than the next closest Big 12 hitter. The redshirt junior, who entered the season with 11 career RBI in 60 career games, now has a team-best 15 RBI this season and is second in the conference and 25th in the country with a .488 clip.

In addition to pacing the Big 12 in batting average and RBI last week, Wodtke was first in OBP (.714); second in hits, slugging (1.000) and OPS (1.714); and tied for third in stolen bases (2) and runs scored (6).

The product of St. James Academy had a multi-hit effort in all three games of the series against the Golden Lions, starting with a career-high four hits in the opener on Friday when he went 4-for-5 with a double. He also had three RBI in that game, which was a season-high until he bested it a day later by driving in a career-high six runs on Saturday – the most RBI by a Wildcat in a single game since 2011. In the finale on Sunday, he reached base safely four times – two hits, two walks – while also stealing two bases, scoring twice and driving in another three runs.

During the series, Wodtke was perfect with runners in scoring position, going 5-for-5 in such situations. He also went 3-for-3 with the bases loaded.

Wodtke, who is the owner of personal-best seven-game hitting streak, turned in the best batting average by a Wildcat during a three-game series since 2013 (Tanner Witt, .750 vs. Bethune Cookman).

Also, with the help of Wodtke, K-State hit .411 in the UAPB series and scored 46 runs – its most in a three-game set since 2005.

This marks the second straight week a Wildcat earned a Big 12 honor as Jake Scudder picked up top newcomer accolades last week. Wodtke is the first Wildcat to earn the Big 12 Player of the Week award since Shane Conlon on May 11, 2015.

K-State (7-4) is in the midst of a 12-game homestand and will return to action on Wednesday when it hosts Creighton (6-3) at 3:05 p.m. Tickets are available here while the game can also be viewed on Cox Channel Kansas and K-StateHD.TV along with heard on News Radio KMAN (1350 AM/93.3 FM) and www.k-statesports.com.
