Women Strong at Bradley Classic

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Junior Morgan Wedekind posted her third top-5 finish of the season on Friday as the Wildcats competed at the Bradley Classic in Peoria, Illinois, to finish off the team’s regular season schedule ahead of the Big 12 Championships.

The women’s side finished the race in fourth place, while the men’s side took 10th.

“We are getting better. I believe we can do better with our second through fifth runners on the men's side,” head coach Ryun Godfrey said. “I would give us a ‘B’ for the race today. I am still looking for that ‘A’ performance.”

Wedekind placed 5th with a time of 20:34. Prior to today’s race, Wedekind placed 2nd at the Bob Timmons Classic and 5th at the Cowboy Jamboree.

Senior Paige Stratioti finished in the top-15, placing 11th with a time of 20:57. The 11th-place finish is the highest of the season, topping her previous best finish of 15th at the Bob Timmons Classic.

“Our top-three racers on the women’s side were solid,” Godfrey said. “Emma Wren had a difficult last mile, but she is a fighter and did a good job just finishing. Jenny McCarty was too conservative today, but she will get better.”

On the men’s side, sophomore Colton Donahue posted the highest finish on the men’s side, finishing the race in 24:30 to finish 24th. Junior Jeff Bachman was the second Wildcat to finish, taking 47th with a time of 24:58.

Godfrey is also looking to get more out of freshman Joe Gorthy, who finished the race in 115th place with a time of 25:39.

“Gorthy did not have his best race today,” Godfrey said. “He is a freshman so he will get much more consistent over time.”

The team now turns its attention to the Big 12 Championships on October 31 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The team raced the course on September 26 at the Cowboy Jamboree.
