MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State high jumper Erik Kynard has tied his own school record, set two facility records and broke the Big 12 Championship record this season and for that he was named the indoor USTFCCCA Midwest Region Field Athlete of the Year for a third straight year. Kynard is currently ranked No. 1 in the NCAA with his leading jump of 2.33 meters (7-07.75) heading into this week’s NCAA Championship in Fayetteville, Ark.

Kynard is one of only two jumpers so far this season to clear 7-07.00 as Indiana’s Derek Drouin is ranked No. 2 at 2.31 meters (7-07.25).

The USTFCCCA announced its men’s and women’s region awards on Monday awarding an athlete of the year for track events and field events. Head coaches and assistant coaches were also recognized with awards. Complete lists and accomplishments for all nine regions can be found at ustfccca.org.

Kynard will attempt to win his first NCAA indoor title on Saturday after winning the last two outdoor crowns. He finished in a tie for fourth indoors last season. The men’s high jump is slated to start at 3:30 p.m. from Randal Tyson Track Center and is arguably the deepest and most talented the event as ever been. It took a jump of 2.22 meters (7-03.25) just to qualify for the men’s high jump.
