MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Big 12 Conference announced the 2011 Academic All-Big 12 Track and Field Teams on Tuesday with 20 Kansas State Wildcats making the grade. Eighteen of those Wildcats earned first team accolades and one was honored with a perfect 4.0 GPA. The 18 first team honorees are two better than the previous two years.

The women’s team had 10 student-athletes named to the first team with at least a 3.20 GPA. Chelsie Bonds and Meriel Harwood earned first team honors for a third straight year, and Ali Pistora received her second first team honor. Laura Lee Baird, Denise Baker, Boglarka Bozzay, Lauren Garrott, Cenarda Jackson, Sydney Messick and Sara Stoakes all also made the first team while Amanda Boor was named to the second team for the second time. Baker also has received one second team award in her career.

On the men’s first team Jack Sachse was one of 25 Big 12 track and field student-athletes recognized with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Seven more Wildcats joined Sachse on the men’s first team. Moritz Cleve and Sam James each were named to the first team for the third time in their careers. Blaine Cash, Michael Healey, Ryan Hershberger, Luke Hibbeler, Gus Vazquez-Milan all received their first academic honor from the conference office. Ben Love was named to the second team for his first academic honor as well.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated in a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

The Wildcats travel to Norman, Okla., this week to compete in the Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships beginning Friday.
