K-State AthleticsMANHATTAN, Kan. - Former All-American and Wilma Rudolph Student-Athlete Achievement Award recipient Devin Dick was granted a sixth year of eligibility this past week by the NCAA. The K-State decathlete will be eligible to compete in both the upcoming indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.

The NCAA Student-Athlete Reinstatement staff approved an extension of eligibility despite his five-year clock expiring at the end of last season. Dick, a survivor of testicular cancer, had only used three out of his five eligible seasons due to redshirting in 2009 and then taking the 2011 season off for chemotherapy after his lone season of competition for Wichita State in 2010.

"I'm excited and looking forward to this season," said Dick, who originally wasn't sure his waiver would be approved. "I set out and accomplished a lot of what I wanted to do last season so this is all a bonus for me.

"It's definitely the cherry on top of the sundae."

Dick, who competed for one year at Wichita State before transferring to K-State for the past two seasons, was USTFCCCA Second Team All-America in the indoor heptathlon and finished second in the heptathlon at the 2013 Big 12 Indoor Championships this past season.

The Hutchinson, Kan., native transferred to K-State for a degree in agricultural business and hopes to pursue a Master's Degree next fall.

For Coach Cliff Rovelto and the K-State Track and Field squad, the addition of Dick will only benefit a men's squad that already had nine returning seniors. Though from a competition standpoint, Rovelto said it pales in comparison to the opportunity well-deserved for the senior.

"We're happy for Devin that it has worked out for him to be able to compete this year," Rovelto said. "Certainly our program will benefit, but this is about Devin and allowing him the opportunity.  He has had to battle through a great deal throughout his collegiate career."

Dick and the rest of K-State Track and Field will begin the season on Dec. 13 at Ahearn Field House for the annual Carol Robinson Winter Pentathlon. For more information on everything K-State Track and Field, visit www.kstatesports.com.
