MANHATTAN, Kan. – Junior Martina Tresch and the K-State Cross Country team continue their stretch of elite meets as they travel to Terre Haute, Ind. on Sunday to compete in the Pre-NCAA Invitational. Both teams will race championship distances as the men’s 8K race will begin at 11 a.m. followed by the women’s 6K at 11:40 a.m.
The women’s team will face the same level as competition that was present at the Roy Griak Invitational two weeks ago. The Wildcats will face two Top 10 teams in Colorado (4th) and Georgetown (5th). Michigan (18th) is also competing. Alongside those nationally ranked teams will be five other schools who are receiving votes in the national poll.
Head Coach Mike Smith has confidence that Tresch will continue to make strides and have another strong finish. “What she is going to do is going to be good,” Smith said. “She is an NCAA Championship caliber runner.”
Last season Tresch competed on the Terre Haute course twice. She finished in 22nd place with a time of 20:56 in the same meet while she finished in 52nd place in 21:09 in the NCAA Championship meet. Former K-State All-American Beverly Ramos owns the school course record when she crossed the finish line in 20:21 in 2008.
Joining Tresch in the women’s race will be senior Boglarka Bozzay who finished in a time of 21:27 last season in the same meet. Junior Laura Lee Baird also competed in last season’s meet and crossed the line in 22:35.
The men’s team will look to pick up momentum as the Wildcats prepare for the Big 12 championship. Sophomore Adam Porter returns after missing the Roy Griak Invitational and is expected to push the pace for the Wildcats.
