MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State Cross Country teams are set to compete for the 16th Big 12 Championship, as the Wildcats travel to College Station, Texas on Saturday. The men’s 8k race is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. with the women’s 6k race taking place at 11 a.m.

Head Coach Mike Smith has seen his women’s team make strides all season. “We are as good as we have been all year at this point,” Smith said. “If we race like we have trained, then we can be very competitive.”

Junior Martina Tresch has been the leader for the Wildcats all season and is expected to have a strong finish. Last season Tresch finished 23rd at the Big 12 Championship and has the potential to make a splash with a Top 10 finish.

“We will look for Martina to lead us. Her fitness level and race readiness has arrived,” Smith said.

Former Wildcat All-American Amy Mortimer currently holds the best individual finish at the Big 12 Championship when she finished second overall in 2000. More recently another former Wildcat All-American Beverly Ramos finished fourth in 2008.

Along with Tresch, the women’s team will bring six other runners. Senior Boglarka Bozzay looks to end her Big 12 Championship career on a high note. Junior Laura Lee Baird and freshman Laura Galvan will also look to help push the pace for the Wildcats.

Smith said that the men’s team will be in its best position to be competitive this season as they will be at full strength. The team will look to sophomore Adam Porter to lead the charge. The Wildcats will bring seven runners with Seniors Armando Del Valle and Phillip Banowetz providing Porter with support.
