K-State Blanks Roadrunners to Sweep Midweek Series
April 27, 2011
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Kansas State recorded a pair of three-run innings while five Wildcat pitchers combined to shutout Cal State-Bakersfield, allowing K-State to sweep a two-game series from the Roadrunners, 9-0, Tuesday evening at Hardt Field.
The Wildcats, who have tied their season-high with a six-game winning streak, are now 26-15 on the season. CSUB lost its fifth-straight game and fell to 24-13.
Jared King led the Wildcats with four hits, including a pair of solo home runs. The freshman became the second Wildcat this season with a multi-home run game, following in the footsteps of his brother, Jason, who had two homers against Northern Colorado. Jared King posted three RBI on the night, including a run-scoring single as part of a three-run first inning.
Freshman left-hander Blake Freeman (3-1) was solid in his fourth start, pitching five scoreless innings. He allowed six hits with a walk and four strikeouts, working 1.1 innings longer than his previous outing against Wichita State while establishing a new career-best in strikeouts.
Jake Doller, Shawn Lewick, John Fasola and Gerardo Esquivel finished out the game with each throwing a scoreless inning, helping K-State combine for its third shutout of the year and the first since blanking Oklahoma 2-0 on April 8. Doller and Esquivel worked perfect frames with a strikeout apiece.
A RBI single by Dan Klein and a wild pitch plated two Wildcat runs in the fifth, and the Cats scored three more times in the sixth. In that frame, Nick Martini walked before Jason King singled into right-center field. CSUB right-fielder Ryan McIntyre had the ball to go under his glove for an error, allowing Martini to score and King to move to third base.
The next action for Kansas State is this weekend as the Wildcats play a three-game series at Oklahoma State. The weekend set gets underway on Friday with a 6:30 p.m., first pitch. All three games against the Cowboys can be heard in the Manhattan area on SportsRadio 1350 KMAN as well as online at both www.k-statesports.com and www.1350kman.com.
