K-State Falls to Baylor in Championship Opener
May 23, 2012
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Josh Ludy jump-started the Baylor offense with home runs in both the fourth and fifth innings as Kansas State fell to the Bears, 11-1, Thursday afternoon in its opening game of the 2012 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
Baylor, which scored two in the seventh to end the game by run rule, improved to 43-12 on the season and will face Oklahoma at 4 p.m., on Thursday. K-State, which fell to 26-30 this year, will face Oklahoma State in an elimination game at 9 a.m., on Thursday. The Sooners won the first game of the championship, 1-0, with a walk-off homer in the ninth.
Ludy hit a two-run homer in the fourth and a three-run shot in the fifth as Baylor took a 6-0 lead. He then came back with a bases-loaded walk to cap his day and tie a Big 12 Championship record with six RBI. He was also the 16th player in championship history with a multi-home run game.
Nathan Orf led all players with three hits, driving in runs on a RBI double in the sixth and a run-scoring single in the seventh. Logan Vick, Dan Evatt and Cal Towey also recorded two-hit games.
A double play erased a leadoff single off Kayvon Bahramzadeh (7-4) in the fourth inning. However, Vick singled and Ludy followed with a high fly ball that just reached the left-field seats to make the score 2-0. The Bears then recorded three-straight singles, the latter by Towey, to give Baylor a three-run advantage.
Ludy’s second homer, a line-drive shot to left field, knocked Bahramzadeh out of the game. Bahramzadeh took the loss as he allowed six runs on nine hits with a walk and four strikeouts in 4.2 innings. The right-hander moved into sixth place in career strikeouts at K-State with 185, while he is now 10th in career games pitched and tied for fourth in career starts.
Josh Turley (9-0) allowed just one run in his seven innings with two walks and strikeout. The Wildcats’ lone run of the afternoon came in the sixth when Wade Hinkle recorded a RBI ground out. Tanner Witt led the Wildcats with a 2-for-3 outing.
The Wildcats and Cowboys begin Thursday’s play at the 2012 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship with a 9 a.m., elimination game.
