MANHATTAN, Kan. - K-State baseball kicked off its 2014 season with the first practices of the year on Friday. The Wildcats will start their new campaign in less than three weeks on Feb. 14 at Cal Poly.
"We got a lot of guys coming back and we have pretty good camaraderie," said senior catcher Blair DeBord, an All-Big 12 honoree from last season, before the start of the first official practice. "For this upcoming year, there is a lot of hype and that is something that is due for us because we have never had preseason rankings to deal with."
K-State returns 19 letterwinners from last year's Big 12 champion and Super Regional squad, including preseason All-Americans Ross Kivett and Jake Matthys. In addition to DeBord, the entire starting infield from last season also returns, featuring All-Big 12 selections Shane Conlon (first baseman) and Austin Fisher (shortstop) as well as senior third baseman RJ Santigate.
The 19 returnees will be joined by 13 newcomers and two redshirt freshmen to make up its 34-man roster.
K-State has been ranked No. 28 in Collegiate Baseball's Preseason Fab 40, the program's highest preseason ranking ever. Baseball America and Perfect Game will release their respective preseason rankings on Monday, January 27.
After a 10-day, eight-game road trip in California to start the season, K-State will play its first home game on Friday, Feb. 28 against Milwaukee at 3 pm. In addition to Milwaukee, K-State will host Iowa, Omaha, Northern Colorado, Air Force, Nebraska, Kansas, Wichita State, Baylor, Bakersfield, Oklahoma State and Texas at Tointon Family Stadium.
