SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - For the first time in his career, Ross Kivett has been named to the Golden Spikes Preseason Watch List, USA Baseball announced. The Golden Spikes award, sponsored by Major League Baseball, is annually given to the nation's top amateur player.
Kivett, a senior second baseman for the nationally-ranked Wildcats, has garnered several preseason accolades since being named Big 12 Player of the Year as well as an All-American last year. He has been awarded four preseason All-American honors this season, including three first team nods.
A native of Broadview Heights, Ohio, Kivett batted .360 (94-for-261) with 15 doubles, 4 triples, 3 home runs, 39 RBI and 26 stolen bases last season. He is a career .323 hitter with 42 extra-base hits and 59 stolen bases.
This is the second straight year a Wildcat has been named to the Golden Spikes Preseason Watch List after Jared King was selected in 2013. Two other Wildcats, A.J. Morris as a finalist in 2009 and Nick Martini as a preseason watch list honoree in 2011, have also been in contention for the Golden Spikes Award in the last six years.
Kivett is one of four Big 12 players on the preseason watch list as he is joined by Kevin Cron, a junior infielder at TCU, Brandon Finnegan, a junior pitcher from TCU, and Harrison Musgrave, junior pitcher from West Virginia.
This year's watch list features 60 of the nation's top amateur players, and will be a "rolling" list until May 27 - when the Golden Spikes Award semifinalists are announced - ensuring that athletes can play themselves into consideration for the award throughout the collegiate and high school seasons.
On April 10, USA Baseball will release its 50-man midseason watch list, shaped by USA Baseball staff and its committee of amateur baseball experts and media. On May 27, USA Baseball will announce the semifinalists for the 2014 Golden Spikes Award. The semifinalists list will be sent to a voting body consisting of past USA Baseball National Team coaches and press officers, members of the media that follow the amateur game closely, select professional baseball personnel, current USA Baseball staff and the 36 previous winners of the award, representing a group of more than 200 voters.
Fan voting will once again be a part of the Golden Spikes Award in 2014. Tuesday, May 27, marks the day when amateur baseball fans across the country will be able to vote for their favorite semifinalists at GoldenSpikesAward.com. As part of this selection process, all voters will be asked to choose three players from the list. On Tuesday, June 3, USA Baseball will announce the finalists, and voting will once again commence that same day.
Last year, University of San Diego's infielder, Kris Bryant, took home the prestigious award, joining a group of recent winners that includes Mike Zunino (2012), Trevor Bauer (2011), Bryce Harper (2010), Stephen Strasburg (2009) and Buster Posey (2008).
Kivett and the K-State baseball team, ranked as high as No. 18 in preseason polls, start the 2014 season tonight at Cal Poly. First pitch against the Mustangs at Baggett Stadium is 8 pm CT. The game can be heard live on 1350 KMAN and k-statesports.com.
