MANHATTAN, Kan. – After earning two wins and shutting out the Big 12’s top offense, redshirt freshman Nate Griep was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for the period ending March 23, the conference announced.
In his first career Big 12 start, Griep quieted Oklahoma, which leads the conference with a .305 team batting average, by throwing a complete game, three-hit shutout against the Sooners in K-State’s 5-0 win on March 23. The right-hander allowed five total base runners – three hits, a walk and an error – and used 108 pitches over the course of the 30 batters he faced.
The Omaha, Nebraska native helped lead K-State to its first shutout at Oklahoma since April 24, 1971 and the Wildcats’ first shutout on the road against a conference opponent since April 26, 1992 at Nebraska. It was also the first nine-inning complete game shutout thrown by a K-State pitcher in a conference road game since April 25, 1987 when Paul Iseman held Iowa State to no runs and eight hits.
Griep earned wins in each of his two starts over the week, his second and third career starts overall. He finished 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA (2er, 14.0ip), seven strikeouts, and one walk. He scattered nine hits in his 14 innings, as opponents hit .188 against in the two starts. He struck out five and did not walk a batter while allowing two runs on six hits in five innings pitched against Air Force on March 18.
Griep has held opponents to a .163 batting average against this season, the second-best mark in the Big 12. His 1.42 ERA, meanwhile, is third-best in the conference.
Griep is the first Wildcat to be named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week since Jake Matthys earned the second of his two awards last season on May 20. This is the third Big 12 weekly honor earned by K-State this season as Ross Kivett and Mitch Meyer were named the conference’s player of the week on March 3 and March 17, respectively.
It is the sixth time a Wildcat has earned the Big 12’s Newcomer of the Week honor and 44th time garnering a Big 12 weekly award in program history.
Griep and the Wildcats will play two midweek games at home this week, starting on Tuesday, March 25 against Omaha. First pitch against the Mavericks at Tointon Family Stadium is set for 6:30 pm.
