STILLWATER, Okla. – Kansas State’s Austin Fisher is one of 25 shortstops nationally to be named to the initial watch list for the 2013 Brooks Wallace Award, the College Baseball Hall of Fame has announced.

The award recognizes the nation’s top shortstop and will be presented during the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s Night of Champions on June 29 in Lubbock, Texas.

Fisher, the only Big 12 player to make the watch list, is the third Wildcat shortstop to be up for the award as Drew Biery was a semifinalist in 2009 before Carter Jurica was a candidate in 2010. Pitcher Daniel Edwards was also a candidate in 2007 and 2008 before the award was focused solely on shortstops beginning in 2009.

A product of Lenexa, Kan., Fisher enters play Saturday with a .324 batting average in 39 games, including 38 starts. The left-handed hitter leads the team and ranks second in the Big 12 with 14 doubles, while he has three triples, one home run and 25 RBI.

Fisher has thrived in late-game situations as he singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth on April 5 against Texas Tech on a two-strike, two-out pitch. Four days later, Fisher completed a five-run K-State comeback by hitting a game-tying double in the eighth inning against Wichita State, a game the Wildcats won on a passed ball the next inning.

Kansas State continues its three-game series at No. 27 Oklahoma State Saturday afternoon in a 3 p.m., contest at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium. The game can be heard in the Manhattan area on SportsRadio 1350 KMAN, while free live audio is available online at both www.k-statesports.com and www.1350kman.com.
