2012 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship Bracket
LUBBOCK, Texas – Kansas State will begin the 2012 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship with a 12:30 p.m., contest against top-seeded Baylor on Wednesday as the Conference announced game times for next week’s championship Sunday morning.
The Wildcats, who are the No. 8 seed in the championship, will travel to Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark for the sixth-consecutive season. K-State begins Division One play against a Bear squad that went 20-4 in Big 12 play this season, while fourth-seeded Oklahoma and No. 5 seed Oklahoma State round out Division One and will open up the championship with a 9 a.m., contest on Wednesday. Division Two consists of No. 2 seed Texas A&M, No. 3 seed Texas, No. 6 seed Missouri and No. 7 seed Kansas.
The winners of the two games in Division One will meet at 4 p.m., on Thursday, while the two other squads will face in elimination game at 9 a.m.
K-State’s matchup with Baylor will be the fourth in the last five years of the championship. The Wildcats defeated the Bears, 3-2, in 2008 to win their pool and advance to the title game. Kansas State also knocked off Baylor, 9-4, in 2009 before falling to BU, 11-8, in 2010. The Wildcats are 3-1 all-time against the Bears in the Big 12 Championship and will be looking to make amends for a three-game sweep to Baylor earlier this season.
The Wildcats are 2-3 all-time against Oklahoma in championship play thanks to a pair of victories last season. K-State opened the 2011 championship with a 5-4 victory over the Sooners and, after falling to Texas A&M, topped OU by one run again in an elimination game, 4-3. The Sooners won the three-game series against the Wildcats earlier this year in Norman as they took the opener and the rubber match by scores of 5-1 and 4-3, respectively, while the Wildcats won the middle game of the series, 8-7.
Kansas State is also 2-3 in championship play against Oklahoma State and could face the Cowboys in the Big 12 Championship for the first time since 2008. That season, the Wildcats knocked off the second-seeded Cowboys, 3-2, in the opening game en route to their title-game appearance. Just like Baylor, the Wildcats will be looking to rebound against an OSU club that swept the season series in Manhattan in late April.
