MANHATTAN, Kan. – Each week throughout the summer, k-statesports.com takes look at current and former Wildcats in collegiate summer leagues and in the professional ranks.
California Collegiate League
Tanner Witt, a senior for the 2013 season, had just two at-bats last week for the San Luis Obispo Blues… Witt is hitting .250 (10-for-40) this summer with two doubles, eight walks and five RBI to go along with seven steals, while he is reaching base at a .423 mark… The Blues are 21-11 this summer, including an 11-7 record in CCL play to sit in second place, 1.5 games behind Santa Barbara.
Cape Cod League
A junior for the 2013 season, Jared King recorded hits in all four games – including three multi-hit games – last week for the Falmouth Commodores… The outfielder went 2-for-4 at Cotuit on Tuesday and came up with two more hits at Cotuit the next day… On Saturday, King doubled against Brewster and capped his week with two hits, including a double, with a RBI on Sunday at Bourne… King is hitting .370 (30-for-81) with nine doubles, three home runs and seven RBI in 19 games as the leadoff hitter for the Commodores… King is fourth in the Cape Cod League in batting average, while he leads the league in doubles, is tied for second in hits and is tied for fourth in runs scored (17)… Falmouth leads the western division with a 12-9 record, one game ahead of Cotuit.
Perfect Game Collegiate League
Ross Kivett had a record-breaking performance last week for the Glens Falls Golden Eagles… The second baseman, who recorded hits in all five games, also stole three bases to push his season total to 23, a new Perfect Game Collegiate League record… Kivett broke the record by stealing both second and third base on Sunday against Albany, a game in which he went 1-for-4 with a RBI… He began his week by going 3-for-5 with a RBI on Wednesday at Oneonta before a two-hit game with two RBI on Thursday at Albany and another two-hit game with a RBI against Watertown on Saturday… Kivett is hitting .396 (40-for-101) with four doubles, two triples, two home runs and 17 RBI to go along with 27 runs scored in 28 games… The Broadview Heights, Ohio, native leads the PGCBL in steals and hits, while he is second in batting average, and third in on-base percentage (.496) and runs scored… Jake Doller is also on the Golden Eagle roster this summer and took the loss in his only game last week on Saturday against Watertown… The right-hander allowed two runs on three hits with a walk and a strikeout in 2.2 innings… Doller is 1-1 with a 3.48 ERA this summer, allowing eight earned runs on 21 hits with four walks and 16 strikeouts in 20.2 innings… Glens Falls is tied for second in the league with a 15-13 record.
Pitchers Joe Flattery and Matt Wivinis, along with infielder Austin Fisher, led the Rossville Rattlers to a 5-0 mark last week… They began the week with an 8-2 win over the Midwest Bruins on Tuesday and came back with a 16-3 win over the Bruins the next day… After defeating the Lee’s Summit Monarchs, 3-1, on Saturday, Rossville swept a doubleheader from the Wichita Sun Devils on Sunday by scores of 4-0 and 1-0… Updated statistics for the Rattlers, who are 15-6 this summer, are not available.
Texas Collegiate League
Juniors-to-be Gerardo Esquivel and RJ Santigate were selected to play in Monday-night’s Texas Collegiate League All-Star Game following a stellar first half of the season for the East Texas Pump Jacks… Santigate is hitting .287 this summer with three doubles, a triple and nine RBI to go along with 17 walks (sixth in TCL) and 15 runs scored… The third baseman tallied a pair of multi-hit games last week, going 2-for-3 against Victoria on Tuesday, while he was 3-for-4 with two RBI at The Woodlands on Saturday… Esquivel is 2-0 this summer with a 1.47 ERA in 14 games, allowing just three earned runs on 11 hits in 18.1 innings… He took the win in his only outing last week on Tuesday against McKinney when he tossed two no-hit innings with two walks and two strikeouts… Blair DeBord is also playing for East Texas this summer… He went hitless in three games last week as he is now hitting .175 (7-for-40) with two doubles and three RBI in 14 games… East Texas leads the TCL at the all-star break with a 23-7 record, three games ahead of Victoria.
Walter Johnson Baseball League
Sophomores-to-be Kyle Speer, Nate Williams and Robert Youngdahl led the Topeka Golden Giants to a pair of victories last week… Speer did not play last week and is hitting .328 (20-for-61) with seven doubles, three triples and 12 RBI, while he is getting on base at a .523 clip in 22 games… Williams started and took the win on Friday against Park City after allowing four runs on six hits with five walks and a strikeout in 5.2 innings… The right-hander holds a 3-0 record and a 3.79 ERA in seven games with 21 walks and 37 strikeouts in 38 innings… Youngdahl is 1-1 with a 9.49 ERA in four appearances… He has also seen 24 plate appearances, going 5-for-24 (.294) with a triple and six RBI, while working six walks and scoring seven runs… The Golden Giants are 27-10 this season, including a 20-9 mark in Walter Johnson League play to lead the league.

James Allen (Low A: Dayton/Cincinnati): Allen started the first two games of his career last week for the Dayton Dragons of the Low A Midwest League… Allen, a seventh-round pick by Cincinnati in 2011, lasted five innings, allowing three runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts as he took the loss at Bowling Green on Tuesday… Allen was able to bounce back on Sunday as he limited Great Lakes to just two runs on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts in five innings to earn the win… Allen holds a 6-3 record and a 3.58 ERA in 22 games, allowing 24 earned runs on 53 hits in 60.1 innings to go along with 23 walks and 49 strikeouts… Dayton is in seventh place in the eastern division during the second half at 7-10, while the Dragons are 37-50 overall.

Kayvon Bahramzadeh (Rookie Arizona League: AZL Athletics/Oakland): A 24th-round selection this year by Oakland, Bahramzadeh also started his first game as a professional on Saturday for the AZL Athletics of the Rookie Arizona League… Bahramzadeh allowed just one hit with a walk and two strikeouts in three innings of a predetermined pitch count start at the AZL Diamondbacks… In four games this year, the right-hander is 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA, allowing four runs on seven hits with a walk and 14 strikeouts in 10 innings… His 14 strikeouts are tied for first among pitchers in the Arizona League that have thrown 10 innings or less… The AZL A’s lead the east division with an 11-3 record, just percentage points ahead of the AZL Cubs.

Justin Bloxom (Double A: Harrisburg/Washington): Bloxom homered three times last week for the Harrisburg Senators of the Double A Eastern League… Bloxom, a 2009 draft pick by Washington, went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI at Bowie on Thursday and duplicated that line at Erie on Saturday… The third baseman finished his week with a solo homer against the SeaWolves on Sunday… Bloxom is hitting .221 (15-for-68) with two doubles, four home runs and 12 RBI in his 18 games with the Senators… He was hitting .259 with 13 doubles, 12 homers and 34 RBI for High A Potomac before being promoted… His 12 homers for the P-Nats are still tied for fourth the Carolina League, while he is tied for eighth in slugging percentage (.478)… The Senators are second in the Eastern League Western Division with a 48-40 record, 2.5 games behind Akron.

Jake Brown (Rookie: Bristol/Chicago AL): A 30th-round selection in this year’s draft by the Chicago White Sox, Brown saw action in six games last week for the Bristol White Sox of the Rookie Appalachian League… The shortstop began his week with a two-hit game against Johnson City on Monday, producing a double and a RBI… He also singled in games at Burlington on Wednesday and Greeneville on Sunday… Brown is 5-for-27 (.185) in nine games this season with a double and two RBI… Bristol is fourth in the west division at 6-14.

Jared Goedert (Triple A: Columbus/Cleveland): Goedert tallied six hits in four games last week for the Columbus Clippers of the International League… Goedert, a ninth-round pick by Cleveland in 2006, was 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI at Toledo on Tuesday before another two-hit game with a double on Friday against Indianapolis… He also hit a two-run homer against the Indians on Saturday… Goedert is hitting .287 with 10 doubles, eight home runs and 34 RBI in 43 games in Triple A… His .494 slugging percentage would rank ninth in the league if he had met the required minimum of at-bats… He began his year playing for Double A Akron, hitting .395 (49-for-124) with 10 doubles, one triple, five homers and 17 RBI in 35 games… The Clippers are second in the International League West Division with an even 45-45 record.

Wade Hinkle (Rookie: Orem/Los Angeles AL): Hinkle, a 27th-round selection by the Los Angeles Angels in this year’s draft, continues to dominate Pioneer League pitching as he recorded a hit in six of seven games – including four multi-hit games – last week for the Orem Owlz… Hinkle drove in two runs on Monday against Grand Junction and then went 1-for-2 with a homer against the Rockies on Tuesday… He followed that up with a two-hit game with a homer and two RBI on Wednesday, a three-hit game with a double and three RBI at Ogden on Thursday, two more RBI on Friday and back-to-back two-hit games against Idaho Falls on Saturday and Sunday… In 21 games as a professional, Hinkle is hitting .338 (24-for-71) with three doubles, six home runs and 21 RBI… Hinkle’s 21 RBI leads the Pioneer League, while he is tied for first in home runs and walks (15), second in total bases (45) and OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage;1.107) and third in both on-base percentage (.473) and slugging percentage (.634)… The Owlz are fourth in the south division with a 9-12 record but are one game out of a tie for second and four games out of first.

Kyle Hunter (Low A: Clinton/Seattle): Hunter threw in three games last week for the Clinton LumberKings of the Low A Midwest League… Hunter, a 31st-round draft pick last year by Seattle, began his week on Tuesday by tossing a scoreless inning with two strikeouts at Burlington before giving up two runs on four hits in 1.1 innings on Thursday against Beloit… The left-hander was able to bounce back on Sunday with 2.1 scoreless innings with four strikeouts at Quad Cities… In 23 relief appearances this year, Hunter is 0-5 despite a low 3.35 ERA, allowing 16 earned runs in 43.0 innings with only five walks and 35 strikeouts… Clinton is tied for first in the western division during the second half with a 10-7 record and is 33-52 overall.

Carter Jurica (High A: San Jose/San Francisco): A pair of two-hit games highlighted Jurica’s week for the San Jose Giants of the High A California League… Jurica, a third-round selection by San Francisco in 2010, went 2-for-4 at Stockton on Tuesday before recording a pair of doubles and four RBI against Modesto on Wednesday… He also drove in a run against the Nuts on Thursday and against Rancho Cucamonga on Saturday… Jurica is hitting .274 with eight doubles, two triples, two home runs and 30 RBI in 58 games this year… San Jose is 7-11 during the second half to sit in a tie for third in the north division, while the Giants are 45-43 overall.

Jason King (Low A: West Michigan/Detroit): King has not played for the West Michigan Whitecaps of the Low A Midwest League since going on the disabled list following a game on June 26… A fourth-round draft pick by Detroit last year, King is hitting .233 with 10 doubles, three home runs and 16 RBI in 45 games after starting his season late due to an injury… West Michigan is tied for fifth in the eastern division with an 8-9 second-half record and is 44-43 overall.

Dan Klein (Class A Short-Season: Vancouver/Toronto): Klein, a 28th-round pick by Toronto this year, played in four games last week for the Vancouver Canadians of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League… The catcher drove in a run on Tuesday against Salem-Keizer before a two-hit game against the Volcanoes on Friday… In 14 games this season, Klein is hitting .191 (9-for-47) with three doubles, two home runs and nine RBI… The Canadians are second in the west division with a 14-9 record, 2.5 games behind first-place Everett.

Evan Marshall (Double A: Mobile/Arizona): Marshall earned the win in his only appearance last week for the Mobile BayBears of the Double A Southern League… A fourth-round selection by Arizona in 2011, Marshall worked two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, on Thursday at Montgomery to pick up his fourth victory of the season… The right-hander, who was named the Diamondbacks Minor League Pitcher of the Month for June, holds a 4-1 record and a 1.53 ERA with a league-leading 16 saves… His 16 saves are tied for first among all Double A pitchers… Marshall has allowed just five earned runs on 28 hits in 29.1 innings with five walks and 17 strikeouts… The BayBears, who won the first-half south division title, are in third place during the second half at 8-10 and are 48-40 overall.

Nick Martini (Low A: Quad Cities/St. Louis): A seventh-round selection of St. Louis last year, Martini played in seven games last week for the Quad Cities River Bandits of the Low A Midwest League… The outfielder had two hits, including a double, on Wednesday at Kane County, while he singled and scored against the Cougars on Friday before another RBI single on Saturday against Clinton… In 83 games this season, Martini is hitting .249 with 11 doubles, two triples, two home runs and 33 RBI… Martini leads the Midwest League with 60 runs scored and is second in walks with 52… The River Bandits are in a four-way tie for first in the western division during the second half at 10-7, while they are 45-41 overall.

A.J. Morris (High A: Daytona/Chicago NL): Morris pitched twice last week and earned a victory on Sunday for the Daytona Cubs of the High A Florida State League… Morris, a fourth-round draft choice of Washington in 2009, allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits in one inning at Dunedin on Thursday… He was able to rebound on Sunday at Lakeland when he tossed two scoreless innings, allowing one hit with two strikeouts to pick up his fourth win of the season… Morris holds a 4-2 record and a 3.00 ERA in 25 games this year, allowing 10 earned runs on 20 hits in 30 innings to go along with eight walks and 24 strikeouts… Daytona is fifth in the north division with a 9-9 record during the second half but is just 1.5 games out of first place… The Cubs are 39-47 overall this season.

Nate Tenbrink (Double A: Jackson/Seattle): Tenbrink, a seventh-round draft pick by Seattle in 2008, played in six games last week for the Jackson Generals of the Double A Southern League… The third baseman drove in a run on Tuesday against Montgomery, singled at Mississippi on Friday and also recorded a RBI at Montgomery on Sunday… Tenbrink is hitting .237 (9-for-38) with a double, two home runs and seven RBI in 12 games in Double A… He started his season late due to off-season surgery and played in one game for the AZL Mariners on a rehab assignment, going 4-for-4 with a triple and two RBI… Jackson, which captured the first-half north division title, is in second place during the second half at 10-8, one game behind Chattanooga, and holds a league-leading 52-36 overall record.

Carlos Torres (MLB: Colorado): Torres was called up for the third time this season by the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday and pitched twice at St. Louis… The right-hander entered Wednesday’s game with two Cardinal runs home and two runners on base in the eighth inning and was able to induce an inning-ending ground out… Torres also shut down St. Louis with a perfect eighth inning the next night, striking out Yadier Molina before two ground outs ended the inning… A 15th-round pick of the White Sox in 2004, Torres has pitched in six games for Colorado, holding a 3.68 ERA after allowing three earned runs on five hits with five walks and five strikeouts in 7.1 innings… The Rockies enter the All-Star Break fifth in the National League West Division with a 33-52 record… Torres began his week pitching one inning of relief with three strikeouts on Monday at Sacramento for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox of the International League… Torres has pitched in 14 games for the Sky Sox with 13 starts, holding a 5-4 record and a 3.98 ERA… Colorado Springs is second in the Pacific Northern Division at 45-44.
