MANHATTAN, Kan. – Each week throughout the summer, k-statesports.com takes look at current and former Wildcats in collegiate summer leagues and in the professional ranks. California Collegiate League Cape Cod League Perfect Game Collegiate League Texas Collegiate League Walter Johnson Baseball League K-State Pros Kayvon Bahramzadeh (Rookie Arizona League: AZL Athletics/Oakland): A 24th-round selection this year by Oakland, Bahramzadeh started a pair of games last week for the AZL Athletics of the Rookie Arizona League… He allowed four runs on five hits with no walks and six strikeouts in three innings of work on Wednesday against the AZL Giants… He also started this past Monday against the AZL Angels, taking the loss after allowing six runs on six hits in 1.2 innings… In seven games this year, which includes four starts, Bahramzadeh is 1-1 with a 10.06 ERA, recording just three walks as opposed to 24 strikeouts… The AZL A’s are in second place in the east division with an 18-18 record, one game back of the AZL Cubs. Justin Bloxom (Double A: Harrisburg/Washington): Bloxom tallied a trio of two-hit games over the last eight days for the Harrisburg Senators of the Double A Eastern League… A 2009 draft pick by Washington, Bloxom went 2-for-3 with a solo homer on Tuesday at Akron before a pair of two hits games against New Britain on Saturday and Sunday… In 24 games at the Double A level, Bloxom is hitting .236 (26-for-110) with five doubles, five home runs and 13 RBI… The third baseman was hitting .259 with 13 doubles, 12 homers and 34 RBI for High A Potomac before being promoted… His 12 homers for the P-Nats are still tied for eighth in the Carolina League… The Senators are in fourth place in the Eastern League Western Division with an even 51-51 record. Jake Brown (Rookie: Bristol/Chicago AL): A 30th-round selection in this year’s draft by the Chicago White Sox, Brown played in three games over the last eight days for the Bristol White Sox of the Rookie Appalachian League… The shortstop’s only hit of the week was a RBI double at Kingsport on Wednesday… Brown is hitting .154 (8-for-52) in 16 games as a professional with two doubles and three RBI… Bristol is tied for fourth place in the west division at 9-21. Jared Goedert (Triple A: Columbus/Cleveland): Goedert has totaled 10 hits over the last eight days for the Columbus Clippers of the International League… A ninth-round pick by Cleveland in 2006, the outfielder/third baseman recorded two hits in back-to-back games against Louisville last Monday and Tuesday… He also had a big game against the Bats on Thursday as he went 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBI, and he capped his eight-day stretch with hits against Lehigh Valley over the last three days, including a double on Monday… In 53 games at the Triple A level, Goedert is hitting .302 with 11 doubles, nine home runs and 38 RBI… He began 2012 playing for Double A Akron, hitting .395 (49-for-124) with 10 doubles, one triple, five homers and 17 RBI in 35 games… The Clippers are in second place in the International League West Division with a 54-49 record. Wade Hinkle (Rookie: Orem/Los Angeles AL): Hinkle, a 27th-round selection by the Los Angeles Angels in this year’s draft, has recorded hits in each of his last seven games for the Orem Owlz of the Rookie Pioneer League… In the last eight days, Hinkle has a hit in six-straight games, including a stretch of three-straight multi-hit games against Billings… The first baseman went 2-for-5 on Friday, recorded a three-hit game with a double and a homer on Saturday, and he capped his week with a four-hit game with two doubles and a RBI on Sunday… In his first 32 games as a professional, Hinkle is hitting .336 (39-for-116) with nine doubles, seven home runs and 28 RBI… Hinkle leads the Pioneer League in runs scored (30), is tied for first in home runs, ranks second in slugging percentage (.595), is tied for second in RBI and OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage; 1.057), ranks third in walks (22) and on-base percentage (.463), is tied for third in total bases (69), tied for sixth in doubles and tied for 10th in hits… The Owlz are third in the south division at 17-17, just one game back of a two-way tie for the league lead. Kyle Hunter (Low A: Clinton/Seattle): A 31st-round draft pick of Seattle last season, Hunter tossed 7.1 innings of relief last week for for the Clinton LumberKings of the Low A Midwest League… The left-hander picked up his first win of the year on Thursday at Dayton as he shut out the Dragons over four innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five without walking a batter… He also pitched 3.1 innings on Sunday at Bowling Green, allowing four runs on seven hits with no walks and two strikeouts… In 27 apperances out of the bullpen this season, Hunter holds a 1-5 record and a 3.42 ERA, allowing 21 earned runs in 55.1 innings with only six walks and 48 strikeouts… Clinton leads the western division during the first half at 17-13, one game ahead of a three-way tie for second. Carter Jurica (High A: San Jose/San Francisco): Since returning from the disabled list in early July, Jurica now has 10 two-hit games – including five over the last eight days – for the San Jose Giants of the High A California League… A third-round selection by San Francisco in 2010, Jurica went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI last Monday against Visalia, while he singled twice at Lancaster on Wednesday and in all three games against Island Empire over the weekend… Jurica is hitting .287 with 11 doubles, three triples, three home runs and 35 RBI in 71 games this season… San Jose is in fourth place in the north division at 13-18 and is 51-50 overall. Jason King (Low A: West Michigan/Detroit): King, a fourth-round pick by Detroit last season, came off the disabled list and played in five games last week for the West Michigan Whitecaps of the Low A Midwest League… The third baseman recorded a hit in each of his first two games off the DL on Thursday and Friday against Peoria, including a triple and a RBI in the second game… He also walked twice against Burlington on Saturday and this past Monday… In 50 games this season, King is hitting .225 with 10 doubles, a triple, three home runs and 17 RBI… West Michigan is tied for fourth place in the eastern division with a 16-14 second-half record and are three games out of first… The Whitecaps hold a 52-48 overall record this season. Dan Klein (Class A Short-Season: Vancouver/Toronto): Klein, a 28th-round pick by Toronto this year, played in three games last week for the Vancouver Canadians of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League… He went 2-for-4 on Wednesday at Eugene before the catcher recorded a hit on Saturday against Spokane… In his first 20 games as a professional, Klein is hitting .254 (17-for-67) with four doubles, four home runs and 13 RBI… His four homers are tied for eighth in the Northwest League… Vancouver finished the first half in third place with a 22-15 record. Evan Marshall (Double A: Mobile/Arizona): A fourth-round selection by the Arizona Diamondbacks last season, Marshall pitched twice last week for the Mobile BayBears of the Double A Southern League… The right-hander struggled at Montgomery last Monday, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits in two innings… He was able to bounce back on Friday against Pensacola when he tossed 1.1 scoreless innings… Arizona’s Minor League Pitcher of the Month for June, Marshall holds a 5-1 record with a 2.02 ERA and 16 saves, which ranks third in the Southern League… Marshall has allowed just eight earned runs on 36 hits in 35.2 innings with eight walks and 19 strikeouts… The BayBears, who won the first-half south division title, are in fourth place in the south division with a 13-17 second-half record. Nick Martini (Low A: Quad Cities/St. Louis): A seventh-round selection of St. Louis last year, Martini has tallied seven hits over the last eight games for the Quad Cities River Bandits of the Low A Midwest League… The outfielder went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI last Monday at Great Lakes before another two-hit game with two RBI against Fort Wayne on Saturday… In 95 games this season, Martini is hitting .248 with 12 doubles, two triples, two home runs and 41 RBI… Martini leads the Midwest League in both walks (59) and runs scored (68)… The River Bandits are tied for second in the western division during the second half at 16-14, just one game out of first place. A.J. Morris (High A: Daytona/Chicago NL): Morris saw time in just one game last week the Daytona Cubs of the High A Florida State League… A fourth-round draft choice of Washington in 2009, Morris allowed a run on two hits with no walks and a strikeout on Thursday at Jupiter… The right-hander holds a 4-2 record and a 2.86 ERA in 28 outings this season, allowing 11 earned runs on 24 hits in 34.2 innings to go along with 10 walks and 29 strikeouts… Daytona holds a 12-18 second-half record and is 42-56 overall. Nate Tenbrink (Double A: Jackson/Seattle): Tenbrink recorded a pair of two-hit contests in his only two games last week for the Jackson Generals of the Double A Southern League… A seventh-round pick by the Seattle Mariners in 2008, the third baseman homered and drove in two runs Thursday against Huntsville before doubling against the Stars on Saturday… In 18 games in Double A this season, Tenbrink is hitting .270 (17-for-63) with six doubles, three home runs and 10 RBI… He started his season late due to off-season surgery and played in one game for the AZL Mariners on a rehab assignment, going 4-for-4 with a triple and two RBI… Jackson, which captured the first-half north division title, is in second place during the second half at 17-12, just a half game behind Chattanooga. Carlos Torres (MLB: Colorado): Torres picked up his second career Major League win as part of six scoreless innings last week for the Colorado Rockies… The right-hander tossed a scoreless frame against Pittsburgh on Tuesday before earning his first win of the season with another two scoreless innings with no walks and two strikeouts at San Diego on Saturday… The Rockies defeated the Padres, 8-6 in 12 innings as Torres picked up his first Major League victory since 2009… Torres also pitched in relief this past Monday at Arizona, tossing three scoreless innings with a walk and three strikeouts… A 15th-round pick of the White Sox in 2004, Torres is 1-0 with a 1.76 ERA in 10 appearances at the Major League level this season, allowing just three runs on five hits with nine walks and 11 strikeouts in 15.1 innings… Colorado is fifth in the National League West Division at 36-59… Torres has pitched in 14 games for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Triple A) with 13 starts, holding a 5-4 record and a 3.98 ERA. |
