MANHATTAN, Kan. – Each week throughout the summer, k-statesports.com takes look at current and former Wildcats in collegiate summer leagues and in the professional ranks. Cape Cod League California Collegiate League Perfect Game Collegiate League Texas Collegiate League Walter Johnson Baseball League K-State Pros Kayvon Bahramzadeh (Rookie Arizona League: AZL Athletics/Oakland): Bahramzadeh, a 24th-round selection this year by Oakland, started one game last week for the AZL Athletics of the Rookie Arizona League… The Tucson, Ariz., product allowed three runs on five hits in three innings of work… In 10 games, including seven starts, the right-hander is 1-1 with an 8.36 ERA, while he has issued just four walks and struck out 32 batters in 28 innings… His 32 strikeouts are third in the AZL among pitchers that have thrown 30 or fewer innings… The AZL Athletics lead the eastern division at 29-13, one game ahead of the AZL Cubs. Justin Bloxom (Double A: Harrisburg/Washington): A 2009 draft pick by Washington, Bloxom recorded hits in five of his six games last week for the Harrisburg Senators of the Double A Eastern League… A first baseman at K-State that now plays third base in the pros, Bloxom had one hit in four of his first five games of the week, including a double on Friday and a solo home run on Saturday against Binghamton, while he went 2-for-4 with a RBI Sunday against the Mets… Bloxom is hitting .244 with nine doubles, six home runs and 15 RBI in 49 games at the Double A level… He was hitting .259 with 13 doubles, 12 homers and 34 RBI for High A Potomac before being promoted… The Senators are fifth in the Eastern League Western Division with a 56-65 mark. Jake Brown (Rookie: Bristol/Chicago AL): Brown, a 30th-round selection in this year’s draft by the Chicago White Sox, played in seven games last week for the Bristol White Sox of the Rookie Appalachian League, including a great game offensively on Wednesday against Kingston… The shortstop went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a RBI to help lead Bristol to a 3-2 victory over the Mets… He also had a RBI on Monday and singled on Tuesday and Saturday… In 31 games this season, Brown is hitting .235 (24-for-102) with four doubles and six RBI, while he has drawn 20 walks… The White Sox are 13-33 this season. Wade Hinkle (Rookie: Orem/Los Angeles AL): A 27th-round selection by the Los Angeles Angels this year, Hinkle collected hits in all five games in which he had an at-bat last week for the Orem Owlz of the Pioneer League… In doing so, he now has a hit in 21 of his last 24 games… The first baseman tallied a two-hit game at Idaho Falls on Thursday before a homer and two RBI against the Chukars on Friday… Hinkle is hitting .319 in 50 games this season with 12 doubles, 10 home runs and 40 RBI… He ranks second in the Pioneer League in runs scored (44), home runs and total bases (100), is tied for fourth in walks (30), tied for fifth in RBI, ranks fifth in OBP (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage; .979), sixth in slugging percentage (.549), seventh in on-base percentage (.429), 10th in hits (58) and 11th in batting average… Orem leads the south division during the second half with a 9-5 record and holds a 26-26 record overall. Kyle Hunter (Low A: Clinton/Seattle): Hunter, a 31st-round draft pick of Seattle last season, saw three appearances out of the bullpen and picked up two wins last week for the Clinton LumberKings of the Low A Midwest League… The left-hander allowed a run over two innings with a strikeout on Monday at Peoria to earn his second win of the season… He also allowed an unearned run in 2.1 innings with a pair of strikeouts on Thursday before taking the win Sunday at Wisconsin with four scoreless innings, allowing one hit… In 33 games this season, Hunter holds a 3-5 record with a 3.22 ERA, allowing 26 earned runs in 72.2 innings with only eight walks and 61 strikeouts… The LumberKings lead the western division during the second half with a 30-19 record, four games ahead of a three-way tie for second place… Clinton is 53-64 overall. Carter Jurica (High A: San Jose/San Francisco): A third-round pick by San Francisco in 2010, Jurica carded four multi-hit games in six contests last week for the San Jose Giants of the High A California League… The shortstop began his week on fire, going 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI at Stockton on Tuesday before a two-hit game against the Ports on Thursday… On Saturday against Lancaster, Jurica recorded another three hits with a RBI, while he was 2-for-4 with a double to close out the week… In 88 games this season, Jurica is hitting .302 with 14 doubles, three triples, five home runs and 46 RBI… The Giants are in third place during the second half with a 24-25 record, three games back of first-place Modesto… The Giants are 62-57 overall and lead the north division wild card race by one game. Jason King (Low A: West Michigan/Detroit): A fourth-round pick by Detroit last season, King came away with three hits last week for the West Michigan Whitecaps of the Low A Midwest League… The third baseman was 2-for-5 with a RBI at Lansing on Monday and closed his week Sunday with a single at Bowling Green… In 69 games this season, King is hitting .249 with 16 doubles, a triple, four home runs and 23 RBI… The Whitecaps are in sixth place in the eastern division during the second half with a 24-25 record, while West Michigan is 60-59 overall. Dan Klein (Class A Short-Season: Vancouver/Toronto): A 28th-round pick by Toronto this year, Klein played in four games last week for the Vancouver Canadians of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League… The catcher recorded hits in his final two games of the week, including a double against Yakima on Saturday… Klein is hitting .227 (22-for-97) in 31 games with five doubles, four home runs and 15 RBI… The Canadians are atop the west division standings during the second half with a 12-8 record and are 34-23 overall. Nick Martini (Low A: Quad Cities/St. Louis): Martini, a seventh-round selection of St. Louis last year, had five hits in six games last week for the Quad Cities River Bandits of the Low A Midwest League… He had singles at Burlington on Monday and Tuesday, including a RBI in the second game against the Bees… The outfielder then recorded two hits, including a double, on Wednesday at Beloit and also singled against the Snappers on Thursday… Martini is hitting .248 in 112 games this season with 17 doubles, two triples, two home runs and 44 RBI… He ranks fourth in the Midwest League in walks (63), while he is fifth in runs scored (73)… Quad Cities is in sixth place in the western division during the second half with a 23-26 record, while the River Bandits are 58-60 overall. A.J. Morris (High A: Daytona/Chicago NL): A 2009 draft choice by Washington, Morris tossed two scoreless innings in his only appearance last week for the Daytona Cubs of the High A Florida State League… Now the full-time closer for Daytona, Morris worked around three hits and a walk against Lakeland on Tuesday… The right-hander holds a 4-2 record and a 2.44 ERA with four saves in 34 relief appearances this season… He has allowed 12 earned runs on 31 hits in 44.1 innings to go along with 14 walks and 35 strikeouts… The Cubs are 22-26 during the second half and are 52-64 overall. Carlos Torres (MLB: Colorado): Torres pitched twice in relief last week for the Colorado Rockies… The right-hander suffered the loss Thursday at the Los Angeles Dodgers when he allowed three earned runs on five hits with two walks and a strikeout in two innings… He was able to rebound on Sunday at San Francisco when he allowed just one run on one hit in two innings… Against the Giants, Torres picked up his first Major League hit as he singled and drove in a run in the sixth inning… A 15th-round pick of the White Sox in 2004, Torres is 1-1 with a 4.39 ERA in 16 outings for the Rockies, allowing 13 earned runs on 20 hits with 15 walks and 20 strikeouts in 26.2 innings… The Rockies are fifth in the National League West Division with a 41-71 record… Torres has pitched in 14 games for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Triple A) this season with 13 starts, holding a 5-4 record and a 3.98 ERA. |
